Those six kids that were not invited as you say, were they in the gym over the summer when the other kids were there? Tell me exactly who they missed out on. Who said that Willie is determining what kids will play for him when they are in the 7th and 8th grade? Willie is going to look at each and every kid that wants to show up for open gyms in the summer and tries out for the team in the fall. If he was so against football players then why is Ben G. in the starting lineup and Hurtt, Stein, Ball and Wise sitting on the bench. Why did Derek Smith and Jared Lorenzen start and play on a 3 time regional champ when Willie was an assistant? Why did Gino play and lead the team to a title his senior year? I will tell you why, because they wanted to play basketball and were good enough to do it despite what might have been whispered in their other ear that they needed to hit the weights to get ready for the next football season. Both of these sports can exist at a very high level at Highlands if the parents/community would just let the coaches do just that and encourage these kids that do not try out to work hard during their respective offseasons and come out and make these coaches take notice of them whether it is football, basketball, baseball, golf, etc.

Difference between asking why you are not playing basketball as opposed to asking you to try out for the team.

Kids are not asked to try out for teams in high school. They either tryout or they don't. I can tell you that Willie is not going to walk through the halls begging kids to tryout for basketball.

Actually Fath is a senior as well. The other freshman that played JV last year was Clay Cecil and I do not believe that he even tried out for the team this year.

I am with you Mustang 100%. Last year all of these so called fans were ripping on Willie when he won only 9 games and lost 20+. Now his team is 15-1 and everyone and there brother wants to coach the team. I played basketball with Willie from little league through high school and I can tell you that he is the best man for the job. If this was Dale Mueller that we were talking about everything would be just peachy. It seems like some people that live in this school district think that the basketball program should play by different rules than the football program. I would like to know exactly how Willie screwed up with Drew Simons. Last I knew he attended one practice and decided that he did not want to play. As for the comment regarding keeping kids and not playing them, this has been going on for years. Take it from someone who went through it personally.

Could not agree more Passer. You and I were seeing things from the same vantage point in the stands. Thought Highlands only played okay, due primarily to the poor officiating. Hard to get into the flow of a game when you are not sure what the officials are going to call or not call. I am still mystified as to how Hicks did not get a technical in the first minutes of the game. He definitely intimidated the officials. As for Conner, they are okay but by no means are they a threat to win the Region.

I would say that Hurtt is number 9 and Michael Eaton is number 10. Rest assured that unless someone gets hurt in the next couple of weeks Willie will not extend the bench. Remember these kids are only sophomores. When they are young next year, they will benefit from playing all of those games on their home court. The kids that really want to play basketball will be there in the summer to get their work in in addition to hitting the weights for football.

Hurtt is not in the 8 man rotation.

Yes Male did play NC up on the hill. I to was a young lad and remember being amazed at how high Griffith could jump. I believe the year was either 1975 or 1976.

Oh, remember the days very well. How far do you want to go back? Here are a few that I can remember. Dicky Beal, Phil Davis, Ricky Walton, Bill Blasingame, Deron Blasingame, Bob Cowie, Scott Trammell, Willie Schlarman. Just a few off the top of my head.

Unfortunately I was not able to get in the gym tonight to see this terrific basketball game. I will still stand by what I said after seeing them play at St. Henry a few weeks ago and again on Monday night, when you play against this Highlands team you had better bring your hard hat because they are going to bang on you for 32 minutes. Just goes to show what a little coaching and hard work can do for a group of kids if they buy into the system that the coach is pushing on them.

How did you guys get into the game? I saw LN standing outside just as I was at about ten minutes to 7.

For everyone's information, Highlands girls do not have a game tonight.

What is everyone's opinion on when exactly this became a rivalry? Just curious to see what everyone thinks.

With Highlands weak schedule thus far I do not even see this being a contest. The real question here besides Tierney will be whether the officials let the kids play or call all of the ticky tack stuff. If this game is allowed to get physical, I look for the Birds to make this a close game.

Game was close in the first half with Highlands taking a 31-29 lead into the locker room. Second half started with Dixie scoring the first five points to take a 34-31 lead and then Highlands turned up the pressure to jump in front by double digits. Very good games by Ben G. and Vories. Lawson lit it up in the first half, but had a very difficult time getting open looks in the second. This team is for real despite perceptions by some of a suspect schedule.

If the kid is so good that he is playing freshman basketball, why is he suiting up for the 8th grade game?

Scott Benton was the kid from Walton. And if we are creating a list of players from the last 25 years there is no way that Willie Schlarman is not on this list. Possibly even Tom Freppon from NCC.
