From the school: Bracken County High School is proud to announce the hiring of Aaron Rigdon as the next Head Coach of the Polar Bears Boys Basketball Program. Coach Rigdon brings a strong basketball background, proven coaching success, and a passion for developing student-athletes both on and off the court. With 11 years of high school coaching experience, he has built a reputation for leadership, hard work, and creating winning programs. A former standout player at St. Patrick High School, Coach Rigdon helped lead his team to the 1995 All “A” Region Championship. He earned All-Region honors during his playing career and is a current member of the 10th Region Hall of Fame as a player. Coach Rigdon began his coaching career at St. Patrick High School, where he served as an assistant coach under Matt Taylor and John Kirkpatrick before taking over as head coach for three seasons from 2016-17 through 2019-20. He then joined the staff at Pike Central High School, where he spent five years and coached four seasons as an assistant. During that stretch, Pike Central captured four consecutive district championships, advanced to two regional semifinals, made a regional finals appearance, and won the 2A region in their section. Most recently, Coach Rigdon served at Belfry High School, where the program recorded its first 20-win regular season in many years and claimed a district championship. Beyond basketball, Coach Rigdon is a dedicated educator. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Special Education from the University of the Cumberlands. He is currently a licensed special education teacher. Coach Rigdon is also a proud father of two children, Brendan Jackson and Jaylan Rigdon. Jaylan currently plays basketball at the University of Pikeville, while Brendan attends Pikeville Middle School. Bracken County High School is excited for the future of Polar Bears Basketball under Coach Rigdon’s leadership. The Harrison County Fillies softball team won the 2A state title today in Owensboro, defeating North Oldham 10-0.

Mason County Schools posted a Virtual Learning Teacher job on Tuesday and posted a full-time substitute position today. I assume the family will take those jobs. I’d say the Myricks are definitely unhappy because one of them has been an assistant coach for eight years and wasn’t interviewed and found out who got the job on Facebook. Then they give the job to someone who accepted the girls coaching job and left two months later.

In 5A, I think Wooford County should be in the district with Collins, Franklin County, Scott County, and Anderson County. They are instead with East Jessamine, West Jessamine, Montgomery County, and Madison Southern. Geographically is makes sense and is similar to the 8th Region alignment.

Robertson County School announced Alex Schalch as the new head boys basketball coach on Monday morning. Schalch played four seasons at Robertson County, his eighth-grade through junior year, before transferring to Mason County for his senior year, where he graduated in 2020. Schlach scored over 1,500 points as a Black Devil before heading to Mason County, where he averaged 18 points and eight rebounds per game as a senior. He helped Robertson County to their first All “A” Classic regional title in 2018. Schalch replaces Brandon Hinson after three seasons. Bracken County is back from spring break and I think they will have someone by mid-April.

Bracken County is on spring break this week, so I expect they will interview/hire the second week of April. That’s also when schools figure out their staffing for the next school year.

Parents already publicly questioning the coaching hire on Facebook and it’s been less than 24 hours. Ridiculous. Give the guy a chance.

His wife went to South Laurel and played at WKU, EKU, and UT Martin, which explains how he ended up in Kentucky. I wonder if she will be helping out the girls' team because she is a teacher too. I think it's a good hire for Montgomery County. Parker Stewart was also the district athletic director at Jackson County, so I think he learned quickly about how to run a program. He also has an MBA. He certainly has the Division I connections and knows how to develop players.

That would be a good hire for Bracken County.

He has a chance to win a state title again at GRC next year. When Coach Cook & Graham retire, they will probably name the court after them or something. I wouldn't leave that.

Wonder if he’s going to another school.

By homeschool I think you mean he is “virtual” where he is still enrolled at Campbell County but completes classes online.

St. Xavier’s student section booed Athens McGillis when he was accepting his KABC Player of the Year award. They also yelled and heckled him when he was walking off the court past them. Thought it showed a lack of class and poor leadership since the administrators, who were standing right in front of the students, smiled and did nothing. Marshall County and North Oldham are terrible? Yes St. Xavier had a tough first game, but overall I think GRC had a tougher path.

It was only two minutes. It takes two to stall ball like this. First time I’ve seen it this year, though.

Bill Watson is retiring from coaching after 28 years as a head coach--42 years total.
