Has work began on the new school, when is it expected to be operational?

How many fans will the gym seat?

It is supposed to be open for the 2027-28 school year. It is the 38th Districts turn to pick the regional site for the 2026-27 season. I would assume they will decide to send it to the Fieldhouse if they can't guarantee it will be done in time for the regional tournament in 2027.

According to a November 2023 article from the Cynthiana Democrat, "The new building will also accommodate a gym large enough to host regional tournaments, boasting 8,000 more square feet than the current facility, according to Noel. Sean Matthews, another lead architect on the project, said the new gym will be able to seat over 3,000 people."

For reference, the Mason County Fieldhouse seats approximately 5,300 and the Letcher Norton Gym at George Rogers Clark seats approximately 4,500. 

Not sure 3,000 is enough to host a regional unless you clear the gym after a game.

I was thinking the same thing. Attendance totals aren't particularly easy to come across for regional games, but a couple of years ago I remember the NKY Tribune giving some figures for total attendance at the 9th Region Tournament. Found the 2024 article with easily with a quick Google. Total attendance was 23,399 for the entirety of the boys and girls 9th Region Tournament that year, and the article also states that over half of that total attendance was for the three games of the boys semifinals and finals. So call it half of 23,400 split three ways, that's 3,900 per game.

Assuming regional tournament attendance numbers would be similar-ish in the 10th Region, it seems like it would be a shame to be holding regional tournament games at Harrison County and forcing fans to miss out on attending the semifinals and finals because of gym capacity when there are two other gyms in the region that are more than capable of holding those crowd numbers.

Actually there are three other gyms, as Montgomery County is 4,000 plus.  However, the article does read 3,000 plus for Harrison County.

So if Harrison County's district votes for the regional to held there on their next vote time, that's where it will be held, right? If not, then the Fieldhouse? What if the vote is tied at 2? Have always wondered how this works, thanks.

3,000 would easily host first round games. From this season it would easily host the semis too.

I agree. Empty the gym for semis, whatever times you want to use. The Fieldhouse did this for how many years? What was the reason they quit?

I've been going to the Fieldhouse for years and then some, never remember them doing that.

I don't remember when it changed, but games used to be at 5 and 730(I believe), even 1st round games.

They quit because it wasn't needed to accommodate the crowd anymore.

Back in the day, if your school played the 5 o'clock game you got out of school at noon or 1. It was $5 per session and the police directed traffic out of the parking lot. All of the faithfuls would just sit in their car until they would let people in for the 8:30 game, lol.

Or we all dashed out to join our wives already seated at Capronis for a quick bite and libation and then dashed back for the evening game.  Historically just great memories.
