You would be surprised, for some parents, it is not always about development. Since you mentioned Beechwood, I will say that they do have a very high coach to player ratio and have the added benefit of a long winning tradition. You can can expect good coaching and expect to reach at least the state semifinals every year. Academically, BW has the advantage of not having to serve as many heavy needs kids as the County School systems would, so their ACT scores are going to be higher on average. Beechwood does compete in class A which, IMO, does not offer significant competition until you reach the state quarterfinals. My son, for example , is 6'2" 280 lb lineman. Even as a Sophmore, he would destroy any linemen BW could put on the field and generally would not be challenged by class A competition. Cov Cath will also provide great coaching and coaching ratios, but at at a steep price. Tuition is in the neighborhood of 6-8 k per year. They play a stronger schedule but would not advance far in the playoffs because they are in the same class as Highlands. My family has deep roots in NKy and my kids are going to the same schools as their mother. We have strong feelings about representing the community in which our kids were raised, so we are biased towards the county school system and its athletic programs. Our particular program (SK) does provide great coaching, excellent facilities (weight room/indoor practice facility/turf field) has a strong affiliated feeder system, and a supportive parent organization. This is not true for all of the county school systems. If you reside in Boone County and your son is not yet an eighth grader, he can play for any of the freshmen teams within BC. So he could play at Cooper, Ryle, Boone or Connor. This way, you could gain experience in a program in which you are considering, without any commitment. I would caveat that statement though by saying that if he played for a year and decided not to stay, it should be for a significant reason like quality of coaching or relationship between coaches and parents or presence of a feeder system etc. Coaches are not fond of developing their competition.

What is most important to you or your son? Being on a championship team, player development, playing time or continuing the relationships he has in youth sports in high school? The answer is different depending upon your priorities. I am in agreement with Hellbird that from a college recruitment perspective, choice of school is irrelevent as the most significant recruiting activity takes place at camps and combines.

Are you thinking reuse? I know a school in BC that could use a turf field!!!!!

FYI, freshman game between WV and SK was cancelled by WV due to commitments of some of their 8th graders. At least, that is my understanding.

No, its not. I have commented elsewhere that as a community, we at BGP lose perspective that the purpose of high school sports is youth development, not parent or fan entertainment

If anybody thinks Golf sounds crazy for a Women's scholarship sport, try rowing!!! Because of Title 9 and the need to offer equal scholarships to both genders, schools recruit for these teams and they are open to those with NO EXPERIANCE. Have seen this with schools in the west and north east.

High School Sports will not suck. Parents and fans just need to realize that High School sports exist for the benefit of the student, and not the parent or the fan. The more kids that participate in sports the better. So what if the level of competition suffers? The development of youth is far more important that the quality of our entertainment! My concern though, is whether there will be resistance to funding high school sports by those that spend on club and aau sports? This is similiar to the political resistance to public school funding by those sending kids to private schools.

I don't know HB. The youth model for independent football leagues and travel teams is already out there. I don't think it would take much to extend it to high school aged youth.

High School Sports won't die, they will just be recreational extra curricular activities. I think swimming is already there.

While there are no select or a aau teams in football, where is the majority of recruiting activity of high school football athletes? Camps and Combines. I would assert that if you have a 6'3" athlete running a 4.3 50 at a combine, he would get a lot of recruiting attention even if he never put on pads! The recruiting folks only show to the games when they are ready to close the sale!

I can understand it if your kid is a d1 candidate in a particular sport. After all, a college education is now a 6 figure endeavor. But the overwhelming number of kids participating in HS sports are not d1 candidates. A six month commitment to a sport should be sufficient.

Wooooooo!!!! Are you kidding me?? Club sports are devastating high school sports, especially on the girls side. Select teams now expect year round participation making athletes unavailable for other sports. See volleyball for an example. Girls basketball numbers are dropping fast because of this phenomena! Another example is swimming. USA meets occur concurrently with high school meets meaning that the USA swimmers are often unavailable for high school meets. USA swimmers also rarely attend high school practices.

SK started to have the freshmen practice with varsity this year and it has paid big dividends. The Freshmen learn the system quickly, can be easily plugged in to JV and even Varsity games, and there are more bodies to work with in practice. SK has transitioned to up-tempo game from the half court game they used to play.

And if the test scores are low because the school serves a disproportionate number of IEP, 504 and free and reduced lunch students? Test score comparisons go out the window when one school can select their students and others must educate whatever comes in the door. Furthermore, there are way too many people here who put the responsibility of educating their kids on the school system. when it should be on the parent. This is a GUTLESS abdication of parental responsibility!!

It goes back to running Owen Hauck Offense. Very simple offense to run and implement,therefore the need for a feeder (in Thompson's mind) is not there.

Boone is land locked both in terms of the school itself, and its district. There is no room for expanding either the school, or the district population, with perhaps the exception of high density housing. In the next realignment, Boone could be 5A.

The 3 year transition to up tempo basketball is complete! Lady Pioneers were all over the Lady Braves with speed, defense and shooting. The jvs came in the 2nd quarter and it was a running clock in the 2nd half.

And if KHSAA was presented with evidence of rules violations, do you really think they would care? Most likely, any complaint, legitimate or otherwise would be buried in administrative hell. KHSAA agenda is participation, not excellence or a level playing field. I say remove the KHSAA from the equation and eliminate the transfer and contact rules entirely. Let each program sell themselves openly.

My son was also invited to the NUC event in Charleston just before Christmas. Considering fees and travel bring the costs well over $1000. After attending several events last year, I found the local events to be worth while, but the all star/elite events have much lower coach/player ratio and they are just not run efficiently. Last year, my son got just three reps out of an 8 hour camp. I believe the camps run by the schools themselves to be a better investment. $50 is typically all you have to spend for a 4 - 8 hr camp and you get feedback directly from a coaching staff, whose counsel is not compromised by profit motive,
