The Highlands running game was great! Four of the six Highlands TDs were runs. I don't consider that as being kept in check. After being at the game and also watching the film, I have to disagree that the Trinity safetys or DBs looked lost. Trinity has a great set of DBs and safetys. The bottom line is the Highlands receivers have some class speed and the entire Highlands WR team is just pretty darn good. They blew by the DBs, the DBs weren't out of position. On the 80 yarder to Gold he ran past the DB, caught the ball, then accelerated 30 more yards to the end zone. Sheehan was double covered on the 36 yard TD pass to the end zone, but he was a couple of steps ahead of both of the DB and safety and he found the seam between the defenders. Another play early in the 3rd quarter, Sheehan was 10 yards ahead of the DB and Towles threw the ball over 60 yards in the air and Sheehan had to wait on it or that was a TD. Taking nothing away from my man Towles, he had to scramble on the play and 60 yards in the air is awesome, just making a point that Sheehan was 10 yards ahead of the DB. Gall ran a long 30 or 40 yarder to the sideline, he beat the DB and caught the pass even though he double teamed and was being face guarded (penalty flag thrown) by the DB that he had two or three steps on. Early in the game there was a long 50 yard pass to the end zone and Sheehan had the DB by several steps and the DB tackled him for pass interference in the end zone. Give credit where credit is due. The Highlands offense scored 42 points on a very very good Trinity team! Top QB + Top WRs = TDs.

I have to comment on this. It was a sweat bowl out there last night. HHS starting DBs, one missed the entire game the other missed most with cramps. Maybe the best DBs in the state, from what I have seen and I am knowlegeable. The offense put up 42 points, probabley 400 yards passing, #25 ran like a man, and the last drive two of their starting receviers gutted it out with cramps the entire drive. Taking nothing away from Trinity because they are a class program and yes won the game, but to hop off the band wagon is not what HHS fans should start doing. They ended up 40 yards short of the end zone on their last drive against one of the best 6A teams in Kentucky.

Best of luck to Cooper. Their head coach is working hard on developing that program!

Does anyone know if the scrimmage will be played with standard rules of football (ie. 4, 12 min. quarters, first downs, PATS, score kept) or will it be the 10 offensive plays per side format?

My take on todays 7 on 7. HHS played the defense that they will play when there are 11 opponents on the field. They stayed in the coverage and covered the area that they are supposed to when there will be 11 guys. Holmes elected to play a 7 on 7 defense, where they guarded the 4 HHS receivers where ever they went with all 7 guys chasing after them. The weak side and middle of the field were open on every play, a swing play to a back would be TD every time. In a real game, opponents will score lots of points. Not being critical of Holmes, this is how they elect to play 7 on 7, there are no rules saying one can't do this. Just stating that HHS just needs to move on and consider this a nice day of football.

Refering to the article in general. My point is it's nice to see somone that actually goes to the practice make either constructive or non-constructive comments on the team.

As I heard HHS QB and HHS receivers performed great, beginning with the first play from scrimmage. You guys are awesome!

The Highlands football program was in shambles in 1987. It's lowest point in the last forty years. The preceding head coach, Jack Eicher, hardly used Jerry Reynolds, a future NFL draftee. The freshman football team lost every game. Dr. Fred Williams brought in Coach Duffy from Danville and he began cleaning up the house. Coach Duffy hired Jim Dougherty to run the defense and began a conditioning program that had never been seen before or since. In order to earn your uniform, you had to be in prime physical condition. The freshman that lost every game three years earlier, brought glory back to Fort Thomas by winning the first State Title in seven years in 1989. Coach Tom Duffy saved Highlands football and turned many boys into men.

Leatherneck, you are 100% right on on you assessment. The entire D has looked outstanding since spring football. O was a little bit behind in spring, but has developed and has looked awesome during summer ball. The experience that Towles has from last year is big time. Not only has Pat looked good at HHS, but he has looked great at camps, and some of his supporting cast has traveled to the same camps and put up some great stats with him. They dominated UK's skills football camp.

Pike is good, but I vote on Towles. Patrick has been impressive not only at Highlands practices, but at numerous camps this summer. He has a core of WRs and RBs that also attended the camps who also put up some impressive numbers. Pat made them look real good and they made Pat look real good.

How about moving on from the 7 on 7 ND like the players of the HHS team has. End of story. There were 25 kids looking forward to a nice trip to a nice college campus. Under the circumstances that came up the day of the trip the HHS coach made the correct call. It would have been nice if this would have been a discussion item on this site two months ago. Again, end of story!

Great camp. Several Highlands kids attended the one in Frankfort and it was a great experience.
