I'm looking through the 1992 program. Here's how the finals played out:

 

Class A: Beechwood 21 Bardstown 14. Beechwood's only regular-season loss to Covington Catholic 53-9.

 

Class AA: Danville 34 Mayfield 7. Danville finishes 15-0.

 

Class AAA: Highlands 15 Paducah-Tilghman 6. Highlands' only regular-season loss to Covington Catholic 41-21.

 

Class AAAA: St. Xavier 3 Boone County 0. St. X's only regular-season loss to Trinity 13-10; Boone County lost 3 games including the season opener to Covington Catholic 42-14.

 

So I'm officially curious. The cover features CovCath QB Adam McCormack. The Colonels evidently had a really good regular season.

 

Someone tell me about the third-round Highlands-CovCath matchup won by HHS by a score of 14-7. Thanks in advance to anyone who can satisfy an inquiring mind.

 

PS - not sure if I overpaid for the program or not. Got it at a thrift store in Cincinnati for seven cents. It was nine cents, but Mondays are 25% off at Valley Thrift.

That was a great season yet somewhat typical for NKY football. Beechwood winning the crown, Highlands or CovCath winning 3A, and one of our "big" schools (usually Boone) getting beat by Louisville

I was under the impression that programs usually had players from the previous season's state finals, but that wouldn't have been the case in 1992. So I have no clue!

CovCath beat Moeller that year. They were undefeated going into the playoffs. I believe they were ranked in the top ten nationally. I don't know how the playoff game with Highlands went but most consider this to be CovCath's best team not to win state and possiblly the best team ever period.

The 1992 Colonel was the overwhelming favorite to win State that year. So much that the KHSAA already had them crowned basically. Hence the pic on the cover. They were extremely good that year. To say the best not to win a championship, maybe. I'm sure the 1982 year would argue that. 1982 team was very very good.

I would have to agree with The Ballgame. 1982 CovCath - Schulte twins and many others is probably the "Best" CovCath team to not win it. Highlands wins in 2OT's at Highlands. Some say the biggest crowd ever to witness a game at Highlands. This HHS 1982 team may be a Top 5 best ever at HHS btw, I believe their defense had several shutouts and opponents avg something ridiculous like 3.4 pts per game against the Birds this yr. Go Birds 20n10

McCormack was indeed the QB-other good Colonel players that year were Dustin Hicks, Jude Hoffman, Mitchell Jobe to name just a few. They whipped Dixie that year 47 to 0 on September 24th of 1992.

Yes, it was a case of assuming CCH would be in the Championship game that year. After all outside of beating a great Moeller team that year, and the Highlands score not being indicative as of how much of a blowout that game really was, they also didn't have any games within 5 or 6 touchdowns and were widely considered the best team in CCH history until that infamous game where some of the Ft. Thomas faithful brought the cannon to Park Hills.
