1992 KHSAA State Championships Program (CCH/Highlands Question)

Featured Replies

In that 1992 third round game, senior, Corey Scarloto scored the first TD on a two yard run. Junior, Ryan Grimm returned a punt for the second score. The defense held against a late game rally to win 14-7.

The following week was the infamous Turkey Bowl at Bell County.

I remember being at the game and everything going Highlands way. My memory is vague but I remember thinking CCH was looking past the Birds if that is at all possible.

I knew when I woke up that day it was a perfect day for this upset. The game was played in the rain on an absolute quagmire of a field, which was a huge advantage to HHS. CovCath had great speed at the skill spots, but the mud negated it. The Colonels were also very reliant on McCormick and their passing game offensively; they were totally built around it. The soggy conditions really wrecked havoc on McCormick's throws and the timing of the passing game.

Highlands, meanwhile, had a horse (Scarloto) in the backfield and at least one SEC lineman (I think two D-I line guys were on this team). They weren't going to pass anyway, and Scarloto and the line just kept trudging ahead in the swamp.

Certainly a preclude to what is now dubbed the mud bowl in 97, with a lot of the roles being reversed about the two teams.

CovCath was the best team in Kentucky in 92. They are certainly in the conversation about the best team to not win a state title, not only from CovCath but from NKY in general. As others have mentioned, CovCath beat Moeller (St. X and Anderson were the two best teams in the city that year if memory serves though) and future Colonels paid the price for it. Moeller and CovCath continued to play off and on for quite a few years and CovCath took some absolute drubbings in future meetings.

Somebody in Fort Thomas convinced Duffy to play Moeller the following year (93), and that didn't turn out very well for the Bluebirds.

But, enough of the trivial stuff. If you want more on the 92 mud bowl or the 92 season, I'll do what I can to help.

The 1992 team had Schlarman and Reynolds who both signed with the University of Kentucky. Reynolds later transferred to Murray.

Also, they had a 3rd OL who signed with Kentucky in David "Bear" Berringer I believe the following year. So, the 1992 team was loaded with offensive line talent. And for that matter, DL talent since most players played both ways on Duffy's teams since there were about 35 players on the team.

Adam McCormick was a real stud at qb. He was the real deal. He could not only throw the ball with the best of them but could also run. The rain definately hurt us that day. It is always the great equalizer. We did not overlook HHS - we knew better. Adam was being recruited by a few Div. I schools. UC and Miami were interested in him. He visited Miami first. UC told him he should visit them first. He tiold them he would be there the following week. Miami offered him a full ride during his visit but he told them he had one more place to visit the following week. They said they could not guarantee the offer would still be there. The following week, UC pulled their scholarship. He called Miami to tell them he would sign with them, but they gave the scholarship to someone else after Adam said he needed another week. He ended up walking on at Morehead, but I don't know if he stayed.

Thanks everyone for the info. I really was curious about the CovCath team and the CCHS-HHS matchup after going through the progra,.

Welcome to the site, 9football! Long-time listener, first-time caller?

Thanks Flotsam and mcpapa. Long - time listener, second - time caller. Been on for a couple of years. I am a coach. Enjoy reading the posts. As a coach, that's probably the second worst loss ever for me. I really believe we would have beaten them on a dry field.

Highlands defense played AWESOME!!! that day.:D With a late game pick near the goal line by Jason(Big Daddy)Sullivan, the Birds sealed a trip the following Thurs to Pine Mountain for some Turkey. Jason is the older brother of current Sr LB Brandon Sullivan....That was one dandy of a game.

That was one dandy of a game.

One of the more entertaining games for sure. I expect starting this year for the 1st time since 01-06' you will start to see a string of great games between the Birds/Colonels.

If this is only the second worse loss you've had as a coach, I gotta ask, what was the worst?

I agree that CovCath wins this one on a dry field 80 percent of the time, maybe even 85 percent.

Which was the signature win for the '82 team, Cov. Cath. or Christian County?

I didnt play on that team. If I had to guess it was the CovCath win probably because of the implications of the win. Maybe a few other "hasbeens" from that team can answer your question. 20n10+12

My worst loss was when Cov Cath came to Highlands and beat us in the mud. We had a nice lead at halftime and let them come back and beat us....again in the mud. We never should have lost that one. They went on and won STATE.

I'm confussed, did you coach for Highlands or Cov. Cath.?

Your first quote sounds like you coached for Cov. Cath. and your second makes is sound like you coached for Highlands.
