Has Highlands Started Something?

Featured Replies

With the recent rules change eliminating Team events in June, and Highlands participating in a 7 on 7 in June, albeit with out a "School Employed Coach", has Highlands started something that we will see more of in the coming years?

Next year will we see 7 on 7's in June with a parent coaching them?

Not that I am against it, in fact, I am for it. AAU basketball will still be going on in July. The fact that June is supposed to be basketball and July is supposed to be football is the basketball coaches speaking out of both sides of their mouths, because they knew their players would still be playing basketball in July any way.

Are you saying that there will not be a team at Notre Dame that consists of players that happen to attend Highlands? Or, are you saying that the school known as "Highlands" will not be used?

I think it is down right wrong to suggest that Highlands has "Started Something" I think that perhaps Ram is "Started Something" over nothing.

Move on Dude.

Yep, no team from Highlands is going to South Bend. Trip canceled!!!!!

Way too sensitive.

Ram was actually crediting the Birds with a great idea .

Oh, good because I was wondering. He's on a roll tonight.

I think it is a great Idea too. What does it hurt? It only helps the players exposure and a teams chemistry going into the preseason. I'm sure these rules were written by some school crying Superintendent that thinks that the Highlands, St X, Trinitys, Beechwood, and CovCath's of the world or really any team that has won a State Championship for that matter, Mayfield, Boyle, Bell Cty.....................etc............ has an advantage over their school because they want to get better by doing the extra things. Paaleease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To make it clear: I have nothing against any team doing this, in fact, I am all for it. This is nothing different then AAU basketball being done in the dead period, or during July - which is supposed to be for football without basketball. I hope all the teams in the state start doing it.

And, for the record: A Highlands fan stated that Highlands was doing this, not me.

A group of players and their parents were going to do the camp at ND. I believe some questions were raised and then checked into and a decision was made that in the best interest of all parties involved, that they would not make they trip. End of story if there ever was one.

But I'm with Ram in agreeing that this is a good idea. Again, what does it hurt?

I hate it that they are not going now, I wish they would. There is no way this a violation of the rules as long as they don't use school equipment and a non-school employee coaches them. Why can AAU do it, but they can't?

Everyone needs to be aware of the rules, there has already been one suspension in this thread after I started it to say that Highlands was doing the right thing. Some people need to understand that everyone that uses the word "Highlands" is not bad mouthing them.

I dont have any inside info just a general observation and have talked to a few parents close to the program who have shown some concern over the line, especially with the loss of Meyer. They are in good hands with Scott Turner so you can bet they will be ready by gametime just as they have in the past.

Sweeperboy you are spot on with the special teams being a huge part of this season. Duenas is a gamebreaker and like a waterbug out there and Weinel will be key kicking the extras and FG's.

TJ- is Sullivan going to Notre Dame to workout for coaches or is it a camp?

Sully will be traveling to South Bend as part of the Defensive unit for the 7 on 7 competition this weekend. Go Birds 20n10

Wow that's impressive. Do you have to be a Mod or can anyone create a post like that. I would love to be able to call people out like that. All that color and great big bolded lettering. Yeah Baby!!!! You know it's screaming with it right.

Anyways, that would be awesome if my team was heading to somewhere like Notre Dame. Sad that the Khsaa is against teams wanting ti improve themselves and exposing their players to scouts. But whatever.

Next year will we see 7 on 7's in June with a parent coaching them?

To answer the actual question, I hope so and maybe it will spawn further discussion and eventually a rule change. Teams should be able to participate in 7 on 7 in June. There are other sports besides basketball that occur in June and July (travel baseball, travel soccer, cornhole ) and multiple sport athletes have found ways to do both for years.

Hopefully the Football coaches and AD's get this fixed. This hurts high school football. For an example teams that start school August 1 will get to put pads on ealry. So they will miss out on 7 on 7 stuff because it will count as a scrimmage. So basically they will not get the work they want if it had been in June.
