Calm down Outoftouch, this is no big deal. This is great day for HHS.

Again, they have followed the rules and have potentially thrarwted a violation by the way the rule is construed. Kudos, to all of those in charge at HHS to make this dissappointing but vital decision on behalf of the program. I believe the communication between powers to be and the administration has prevailed again.

I know the boys are dissappointed but Highlands is Highlands because they dont break the rules and the program comes first.

I would have hated to have seen the Birds forego their 20n10 quest this yr over an exposure camp. Great job to all involved. :thumb:Go Birds 20n10

Highlands was punished for using an eligible player. There is a good chance that the deserved wins will be returned to Highlands which will most likely happen after July 9th, when Brigid Devries (Current KHSAA Commissioner) retires. When she does retire it will be a positive for all people involved in high school athletics in the state of Kentucky.

Yea, but for 7 on 7 you don't have to have much equipment, only a helmet and shirt of some kind. That could be easily fixed if the Boosters purchased the team helmets. And the Boosters could purchase matching shirts for the team. Problem solved.

Yes, there is a rule against it. The definition of what makes it a team event provides the gray area. So, a group of players, who all go to the same school, go to an outside tournament on their own in another state, and even if they are not using any school equipment, the scenario COULD be construed as a team event. In the end, fighting the various interpretations of the Dead Period rules just isn't a battle worth getting into.

 

That is not correct. An entire team of baseball/basketball players from the same school can play games anywhere they want, except for their schools field/gym during the dead period. The only other restrictions are no school equipment, no school uniforms, no school coaches (volunteer or otherwise), no school transportation, or no school finances are used.

This is not a good rule for football, I talked to several college coaches last year and they do not like the kids not being able to participate in 7 on 7 events.

This rule is terrible. It is restricting players that want to improve and taking away from college opportunities. This is a chance for these young men to get exposed to coaches form all different ranks. So whoever started the idea of parents doing this is on the right track if the rules allow it. Also equipment for a 7 on 7 wouldn't be to terribly expensive. You can get a helmet and jersey for 200-250. I think its a great idea and those parents in charge could do fundraisers for it, like previously stated its no different than AAU Basketball or Traveling baseball.

To answer the actual question, I hope so and maybe it will spawn further discussion and eventually a rule change. Teams should be able to participate in 7 on 7 in June. There are other sports besides basketball that occur in June and July (travel baseball, travel soccer, cornhole ) and multiple sport athletes have found ways to do both for years.

It might depend on how your booster club and school is structured. Or you might be able to restructure your booster club so that it is an organization that supports football not the school football team.

I have the greatest degree of respect for Joker Phillips, and I totally understand what he's saying, but I'm not sure I want my team or the coaches of my favorite team emulating Hal Mumme.... just a thought...

I do believe the KHSAA has a different position on the issue than you. If the kids participate as a team against other teams in a competion during June, the KHSAA feels it is a violation of the rule (not the dead period rule but the no 7s in June rule), regardless of the fact that no school equipment, no school uniforms, no school coaches, no school transportation, no school facilities and no school finances were involved.
