  1. I saw Sparks have 30+ in the Mason County game earlier this year. He can really carry Tates Creek when he gets hot.
  2. Hope the Saints win. They are having a pretty good season.
  3. Stenzle is looking good for GRC, considering he is just a freshman.
  4. Tough going for Henry Clay right now with the Moses injury and Boyd out recruiting on weekends. I thought Henry Clay dictated the tempo in the first half, and played very well. It was one of their better halves without Moses this year. Kudo's to the kids and coaches. They had a good game plan, and they executed for a half. Mason did the right thing in the 3rd, going inside to their strength with Miller. Hope Miller can take it to the next level with UK next year. He has a ton of potential. If he and Gillispie "mesh", I could see the NBA in Miller's future. Always glad to see a KY kid do well. (I hope Lofton makes the NBA also, even though he is having a tougher year this year at UT. Would have loved to have seen him in UK blue also.)
  5. Even though the final score was lopsided, I thought Henry Clay played them better this time. At least for 2.5 periods. Then they let it get out of hand, and Station went on a big run. I agree that they are a very good team, and will be dangerous come tournament time. Mack is a great leader on the floor. This will be Stations best year to get to state and win it all. They've had some good teams the last 3-4 years, but couldn't get to the big dance. FYI - Henry Clay beat their Freshmen and JV teams last night, so maybe looking better for the Devils in a year or two. Tough district with Scott County in there also.
  6. Yea, Boyd and Moses both out today. (Moses was on the bench in crutches) Both teams started slow. Kind of a grind it out game. Pretty close throughout the first half. A lot of fouls. Henry Clay started to pull away in the 2nd half. Still only a 5-10 point game until about 4 minutes to go. Then HC got it up to double digits. Didn't see any stats, but scoring was fairly balanced. Prince Stewart won MVP of the game. Nichols had a pretty good game also.
  7. Fucci and Barksdale are very good, especially to be so young. Sparks has had some big scoring nights for them also.
  8. Boone has been playing well. Great win for Highlands, especially without Simpson.
  9. Sayre kept it close through most of the first period. Henry Clay started their run with about 2 minutes to go in the first, and were up 20 some at the half. Prince Stewart (Junior) lead them with 19. Brandon Wilder (Freshman) had 18. Next up for the Blue Devils, is Dunbar on Thursday. FYI - Dunbar lost to Tates Creek by 6 tonight. Marecellus Barskdale (Tates Creek Freshman) just missed a double double. He is going to be a very good player, especially if he can grow another 2-3 inches.
  10. Yea Brown did a great job. Morehead State got a steal in getting him. I could see him playing at a larger D1 school. Of course if Apollo was playing without him last night and their next best player, and Henry Clay had their 2 best players back, I think the outcome would have been different. Even if Boyd weren't out on a recruiting visit, I'd still say HC wins by 8-10. But every team has injuries and issues. That's why I love high school basketball. Things can change so quickly. It's lots of fun. Regardless, Apollo is a good team. Should come out of their region to the sweet 16. I thought the surprise of the day was Lafayette over Adair County in OT. I have seen Adair a lot this year. They are very good.
  11. Any report on how bad Stenzil is injured? Hope he has a speedy recovery.
  12. Have seen Lincoln play several times this year in Lexington and Louisville. Very very good team. Maybe a "sleeper" for the state tournament. I wouldn't be surprised if they upset a couple of teams in the sweet 16. Very solid team and well coached. I love to watch their style of basketball.
  13. Victor Moses from Henry Clay will probably end up at Georgetown College. They have recruited him hard for some time. I think Morehead was also after him for a while. He was holding out, hoping to have a good senior season, and improve his offers. However sprained ankle back in December kept him out of King of the Bluegrass. Then broken foot against Scott Co. will have him out until District play.
  14. Apollo got off to a good start with about a 4-5 point lead in the first. Henry Clay came back and lead by 3 at half. Henry Clay lead throughout the 3rd and most of the 4th. They would get up by 5-6 points and Apollo would come right back. Henry Clay lead by 5 with about 2 minutes to go. But then had 5 straight turnovers to basically give the game away. Apollo cranked up the full court press, and Henry Clay didn't play very smart. Prince Stewart had a great shooting night, with 22 points total. Ryan Brightwell had 11. Freshman Brandon Wilder had 6 points and played very well defensively. Junior TJ Barnes had a good game also off the bench. Again Henry Clay played without their 2 best players, Moses and Boyd. But some of the other players are starting to come on the last 2 nights. Boyd will be back from his recruiting visit this weekend. Henry Clay plays Sayre Tuesday, a tough one with Dunbar on Thursday. And next Saturday play Ashland at the KY PREP Classic in Montgomery.
  15. Actually both of Henry Clay's best players were out. Moses broken foot in Scott County game and out 4-6 weeks. Aaron Boyd was taking a football recruiting visit again this weekend. So HC was missing about 35 points from their starters tonight. I did hear from a family member in the stands, that the Highlands player did break his hand. That is tough and I feel for the kid. I thought Highlands had the game with a minute to go up 4 points. Brandon Wilder, who is a freshman, hit a 3 to get it to a 1 point game. A foul by HC. Highlands hit 1 of 2, to go up by 2 with about 22 seconds to go. HC called timeout and put in 4 of their best 3 point shooters. Worked it around and Brian Nichols hit a 3 with 7 seconds to go, putting HC up 1. After Highlands timeout, they bring it in. Ball gets knocked out of bounds at half court with about 4 seconds left to go. Brought the ball in, got a shot and a tip. The tip almost went in and would have counted I believe. Good crowd and good game, both varsity and JV. Wish the injured players from Henry Clay and Highlands a speedy recovery.
  16. I thought Henry Clay played one of their better games of the year. Especially in the first half. Their press worked very good early. Guards had a lot of turnovers. If Henry Clay had hit better from outside, they should have been up 7-8 at the half. HC let Scott get a run on them in the 3rd and got down by double digits. This happened when Moses went down again in the 3rd and did not return to the game. They hustled back and had the lead mid-way through the 4th. Scott's last 11 points were all from the free throw line to win by 4. Aaron Boyd got his 1000th point in basketball last night. All of Henry Clay's losses have been to top 15 teams. Unfortunately, other than last night, all the losses have been blowouts. They are very senior laden with 7 or 8 seniors. Hardly any juniors or seniors. But they have probably one of the top 5 freshmen teams in the state. And with 4 of 5 senior starters graduating, this group will get 3 years of varsity time. Their freshman team has only lost 1 game this season. Their JV is a couple of sophmore/juniors, but it is mostly the freshman team plays JV. I think 3 freshman start for JV. And JV has only lost 1 game, including a buzzer beater by Scott last night. 3 of their freshmen started for the freshman team last year as 8th graders. Brandon Wilder, Justin Henderson, and Trae Stewart. Henry Clay will have a tough time next year, but by the time these freshmen become juniors, they will have a very very good team. Of course, their district and region is tough.
  17. Henry Clay was down 10 in 3rd Period, and made a great comeback to win by 9. Victor Moses had 22 points and 13 rebounds, but was still hampered by the ankle sprain from 2 weeks ago. He probably was only 50-75%. Also, probably the 3 best freshmen in Lexington were on the same court tonight. Ryan Fucci and Marcellus Barksdale for Tates Creek. Barksdale had 19 points including a couple of 3 pointers. Brandon Wilder for Henry Clay. He had 8 points, 5 rebounds, and fueled the comeback by Clay in the 3rd. These 3 young players will be fun to watch for the next 4 years. All 3 will probably be top players in the state by the time they are juniors and seniors.
