Not sure how often this happens, but I was wondering how often do we see defending state champions play another defending state champion. I can not imagine it would be too often as games are typically scheduled so far in advance. The reason I thought about this is because Fort Campbell plays Paducah Tilgham play each other on Sep 17, PT also plays Mayfield this year making them (PT) the only defending champion to play two teams that made it to the finals last year. St X and Trinity also play each other, making 4 teams that play a game against a team that made it to the championship finals last year. Coincidence or something that we see quite a bit of?

I agree. Whether we agree or not, one of the things that gets noticed is the statistics and the offensive numbers can have a much larger impacts. Just look at the positions of previous Mr. Footballs, not to many young men on there that were just known for their defense. Micah Johnson, for example, was a force to deal with on Fort Campbell's offense as well as a very strong defensive tool used by the Falcons. Everything that I have seen about Dawson says he should be a big contender this year. As well as being great on defense, I think the better he does on offense the better his chances would be to earn this title, as it would help highlight him as a player.

If any of us are victims (especially the ladies), it is because of you and others like you that still believe things such as this are true. Just because you and others feel this way does not mean the rest of can not think for ourselves. Not giving an opportunity to a woman based on the fact that she is a woman is not thinking for yoursefl, it is following the party line. The worst she can do is not any worse than some of the male coaches out there.

It seems that some people forget that for a long time blacks (and other minorities) were inferior as players and coaches as well until some of them finally made it to the 'real professional' teams. Just because it is something that people are not used to does not mean this lady can not coach football or mentor young men. The worst she can do is lose every game, something quite a fey male coaches do every year, and some of them even manage to keep their jobs for years to come without winning a game or very few games.

I think that the youngr guys have a lot more experience than many give them credit for. In many of hte games they played the second half of the game and got almost as much plkaying time as the starters did. I understand that it is not the same as going into the game when your team is up by 40 points or so, but they still got a lot of experience over the last couple of years that will help them out this coming year. They have some key positions to fill, but Coach Berner will get them filled and knows how to get the best out of these young men. I don't expect them to be as dominant as they were this year (but some peope thought this after they won the championship in 2007), but they will still be a force to dealt with.

Look at all of the coaches that are ineffective right now - and they are male. Who is say that a female coach will be any beter or any worse than those guys already in positions. Some of these guys do not get fired even though they have losing records and are considered ineffective. Without seeing her resume and comparing to the others considered for the job, no one on here can say whether she was more or less qualified than the others considered for the job. If the program was in shambles to start with, she likely will not turn it around in a couple of years, then again, male coaches would not be able to do this either as only a few coaches have been able to turn a program around in a couple of years. It will have nothing to do with her sex. As far as the experience goes, some great coaches never participated in the sport that they coached and were very effective. In high school, I had a wrestling coach that never wrestled in high school or college and he coached one of the most successful programs in the state for 10, winning several state championships and placing in the top three just about every year. He also coached 5 or 6 high school All-Americans. Sometimes playing experience is not the same as coaching experience.

Obviously, you have never served in combat with a woman. I have had several that I trusted and they were right there next to me when we were blown up and shot at. I never had any problems. Maybe you were just exposed to the portions that were not as good as others - and there are a great numbers of guys that fall into this category as well.

I was thinking of that too. If you missed it there was a thing on 60 minutes a week or so ago and it said a Somoan kid with both parents being Somoan has a 50-some percent chance of making it to the NFL. Pretty good odds compard to the rest of us.

Correct me if I am wrong, but this is the number of recruits coming out of the state, not going into college in teh state, correct. I know most states have recruits coming to them from other states so I just want to be sure of what I was thinking.

I still find it amazing that some people still believe that just because a school is bigger means that they are better competition. The size of the school does not determine the level of competition, the programs do. A large program does not mean a better program. Small schools can and do beat large schools.

Maybe it is just that the coaches do not know anything about any of the players across the state except for their own. lol. I thought it was a pretty good list. I think you could have 20 different all-state teams being selected by 20 different groups and you would come up with 20 different groups of young men being selected.

^^ Thanks for giving the total stats for the season. And as I said before I am not trying to take anything away from him. He is a great athlete and a great football player, but the stats listed still put him behind Antonio. There were some very good RBs this year and maybe that is why he was selected as second team and not first. I do believe it could have went any direction with the four RBs that were selectedas first or second team all-state - any of the four could have a good arguement for being on the first team. The team championship means a lot more than Mr. Football or other accolades (as you mentioned), but Rees is not the only one who led his team to a championship, nor is he the only one who has had a great career in addition to a great senior year. IMO, all of the great competition for Mr. Football this year makes it that much more of an accomplishment.

Not taking anything away from what Rees accomplished, but Antonio had over 3,000 total yards, over 50 total TDs, was the 2A player of the year and selected to 1st Team All-state. But as you said, I am slo being a homer on this. According to the article, he only had 2,227 yards and 38 touchdowns, but I don't think that counted the playoffs, did he have nearly 800 yards rushing in the playoffs? If not, then he didn't have the 3,000 yards rushing as you mentioned. The Player of the Year was for NKY - not the state, If the AP could not see putting him on 1st Team All-State (even though he was the NKY player of the year) why do you think he would be selected as Mr. Football?

A more recent one than '99 was 2005 when Micah Johnson, also from Fort Campbell, was selected. The smaller schools from WKY can get this award.

Congrats to all of those selected. I was surprised that Fort Campbell only had one selection to the Defense as it was one of the stingiest in the state this year.

Congratulations to Antonio and Coaches French and Mueller for their selections and outstanding season. You all are very deserving of the recognition. Congratulations to all of the others considered as well. On a side note, the Leaf Chronicle article was wrong as Antonio was undefeated as the starting quarterback, he did not play in the Franklin Simpson gmae last year just prior to the playoffs.

I agree with the last couple of posts. Classify schools and they play in that classification for all sports. Classification covers all of those in grades 10-12, unless every school district in the state uses 9-12 grades in high school. Not sure if some use 10-12 any where in the state. The only reason I can see playing up is if the classification used a penalty system for private/non-public schools.

100% agree, I just think they should recieve the accolades without trying to add 'mystical' ones to them.

I agree that this media attention is a good thing for both the programs mentioned, in this case highlands, and Kentucky football. My comment wa directed to the highlands faithful that wanted to lay claim to the mythical GCL championship and now mention of a (mythical) national championship. The program is better than that and has done a lot of great things over the years and does not need to add fake championships to it just to have something to talk about.

I have no doubt in my mind that Highlands has a very great program, and that program does get a lot of deserved attention and those involved in the program do a great job of getting the program publicity, on and off of the field. The thing that I do not understand is why it seems that so many Highlands followers feel that they have to add to the already great accomplishments of the program by trying to add mythical championships. There is not a national championship for high school football (not to mention, I really do not know how USA Today became the country's most reputable national ranking) nor is their a GCL championship. Be proud of hte program and what it has accomplished, but trying to add these mystical things to it does nothing other than tarnish the image of the program and makes others wonder about everything else you have to say.

Fort Campbell would have likely been 2A as they were before the change, the enrollment there typically does not change much due to the requirements to attend school on post. When all of the new housing on post is done and opened up, then it will likely increase some, but until then, it will reamin failry constant.
