The football classes went from four classes to six. My question is what is the rumors around the state about classes and alignment? I know alignment will be up and they will look at the alignment again. I am just wondering if anyone has any information.

From what I hear from coaches, Julian Tackett made it clear at the coaches clinic that 6 classes is here to stay.

Does anyone have the attendance numbers from the championship games prior to the change to six classes?

I heard something about a super class with the top 16 teams in population in one group and the bottom 16 in another group. The rest of the teams would be split evenly. That is hearsay from the state championships.

In my opinion, the six class system will stay in place for 8-10 years before another wave of change comes. X and T will battle it out for every single championship, with Ryle, SK, Male, Manual and possibly Ballard giving chase but not turning the corner. Highlands will win the majority of the 5A titles with BG and John Hardin trying to cut them down every year, with little succes. Central will continue to improve and will take the majority of 3A titles. 1A, 2A and 4A will be more open. After 5-7 years of this playing out, momentum will build causing an outcry for a new system. Although I'm not sure what will be the substitute, I feel strongly that there will be an 'open' class where programs can volunteer to play in a super class and all others will have a chance to remain classified by enrollment. Some schools won't have a choice to be in the open class, I.e. Large private schools and open enrollment public schools. I'm not looking to argue this point, just saying that I think this will be the direction of KHSAA after a long period of sustained dominance by a handful of teams. My counter point would be our basketball tournament. Because no team has dominated the title game and smaller schools doing well in the tournament, we have stuck with one class. Baseball is the same. Let one or two big city teams start dominating these sports and we will see a change in these tournaments as well. I do have one question though: why is track, cross country and football divided by class, but the others are not? I can see an argument for football being made but not with any other sport. Any help? I mean, why is track and cross country divided but not baseball or basketball?

It would be hard for most small schools to win a team championship in track or cross country. Certainly individuals could win the individual title, but it would be hard for a school like Burgin or Trimble County to have success as a team - something they do have in Class A.

Please, please, please...make a super class....or separate those of us that aren't restricted....I want the chance to win the big dog championship with the very best teams involved.

I don't know when it will happen, but I do believe it will happen in the next decade. It will likely have to happen to avoid another "split" vote like there was a couple years ago.

I understand and can agree with you about smaller schools having a difficult time competing for the title in those sports. So it's fathomable for the small schools to win baseball and basketball? Just questioning why it's good for the goose and not the gander!

I think it only has to do with population of a school so teams like Highlands and Boyle would not be in it. Its the highest population of class 6A would make it and I think it would be awful. I guess everyone would get a bye in the first round of the playoffs since there are not enough teams to make a first round of the playoffs. Who knows how they would district this. I guess 4 teams of 4 if they are even close to one another in the state.
