This list is the most perfect reason why college football has 10 +/- teams that win every year. And why it's tough for teams like Kentucky to crack into that upper level. Its nobody's fault - it's just how it is.

To further your point and mine, only one BCS conference is in the west. The SEC and Big 12 is good because all of the best players are in that area. Its hard to compete when there aren't Division 1 players in your state.

There was no explanation of how these numbers were compiled. Since I found it on the page where signing day is tracked, I assume it means FBS, formerly Div 1, committed players.

I've had football coaches tell me that spring football will help Kentucky produce more division 1 football players. Has that happened? Or, is 18 about right or is it high/low?

Correct me if I am wrong, but this is the number of recruits coming out of the state, not going into college in teh state, correct. I know most states have recruits coming to them from other states so I just want to be sure of what I was thinking.

Oregon and Iowa are succussful but a different kind of successful. They don't sniff the competition week in week out that these other perrenial powers do and they also have sub par seasons more frequently.

 

Not sure how much spring football has to do with D1 signings and I'd venture to say none, however, it is a plus to football programs to allow their players an extra 30 practices over the span of 3 years to find the right position for them and possibly allow them to progress at that position s the year goes on, instead of just finding a place for them in July. Remember this is just D1 signings, so it is possible that spring ball accelerates some scholarships but to limit it to D1, I'd say it doesn't have much effect.

18 for KY I would think is better good given the population and bball's popularity. WVA has a great program, these numbers are a testiment to that given so few prospects that come out of the state. Hawaii had 30! That is unreal for a island in the middle of a giant ocean.

I was thinking of that too. If you missed it there was a thing on 60 minutes a week or so ago and it said a Somoan kid with both parents being Somoan has a 50-some percent chance of making it to the NFL. Pretty good odds compard to the rest of us.
