Actually, these days you may be surprised to know that Newport's enrollment is, give or take a few, just about the same as NCC's. The tearing down of a lot of low-income housing forced a lot of students into neighboring cities resulting in a sharp decline in students a few years back. The numbers haven't bounced back.

Good to hear. It would be horrible if they based the entire decision on just one recruiting visit.

How will a less than stellar outing for Hammons affect his chances with these recruiters?

That's how I got my gear. Some of the contests are so easy, it's nearly impossible to lose. Got two shirts in those "hard to lose" contests. Not a bad deal at all!

Actually, I agree completely. I love the fact that the community is coming together and raising funds to take the financial burden off of the players' families. My concern was with how in the thread title, Covington Schools was painted as a district that can't afford the rings, when in fact, very few districts provide them. I just don't really think it is fair to put the district in such a negative light, especially when we all seem to be celebrating a great win by one of schools within this district. That said, I'll be putting the word out to some people in my office to see if we can scrape a few bucks together to add to the cause.

I remember reading in the football championship threads that few, if any, of the schools purchased rings for their championship teams. Instead, each family was responsible for purchasing the ring for their athlete. I guess I'm just confused as to why it's a sad state of affairs for Covington Schools when they are unable to purchase rings, but not for the many other schools across the state that also are unable to purchase championship rings for their athletes. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I don't know anything about this situation, but my assumption would be that they moved to Dayton and are actually planning on playing in the district that they now reside. Aside from atending a private school, what other option would they have, but to attend Dayton if they now live in Dayton?

You're right...and until students are held accountable for scores on state testing (and now the ACT since it is part of state testing) it is going to be difficult to get an accurate portrayal of such students' actual academic abilities. Now, in what ways should we hold students accountable? That's a tough question to answer. Anyone have any ideas?

It will still be figured into the school's accountability scores. Hopefully, everyone taking the test puts forth full effort so that their score will accurately reflect what they have learned in school.

Names I've heard mentioned: Dave Brossart, formerly of Cov Cath Nick Rice, Newport Alum, TMC standout (from what I hear), and current assistant at Dayton Charlie Coleman Melange (sp?), former assistant at Holmes and current teacher at Newport High.

I know the past few years, Dayton has had a lot of coaching turnover. Looks like the new coach has them heading in the right direction. Is Coach Clifton in it for the long haul?

I agree wholeheartedly. Let's also not forget that Ludlow also has won with Ludlow kids. We all know that is not always the case with successful programs. No mysterious transfers have tainted the legitimacy of their success. And, in my opinion, that makes Ludlow's program even more special.

Is Ludlow really that small these days? For some reason, I was thinking they were in the mid 200's.

I'm rooting for Nick too. Hopefully, we'll hear something this week! :thumb:
