I remember reading in the football championship threads that few, if any, of the schools purchased rings for their championship teams. Instead, each family was responsible for purchasing the ring for their athlete. I guess I'm just confused as to why it's a sad state of affairs for Covington Schools when they are unable to purchase rings, but not for the many other schools across the state that also are unable to purchase championship rings for their athletes. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Those boys deserve to have that I hope the community can rally to help provide the rings for them. I was driving through Covington the Sunday after the State Championship and saw a young man walking down the street wearing his Championship T-Shirt and Medal. He looked very proud, I am sure they would feel the same sense of pride to have the rings that they earned.

If the school system bought around 20 rings that would be over $5000. A big expense I would think. Not to belittle the state champs, but a big expense to the school system.

I'm down with a donation.

Does anyone know if a link will be provided so that people can make donations on-line?

I just sent a few emails to some corporate people. It would be a nice story for a hometown company to take on this cause. The boys do deserve it. I would send some money if I had any to spare. I'll post if I get any nibbles.

Holmes Superintendent put out a letter asking for donations. The bottom of the letter says: " All checks should be made payable to the 'Tom Ellis Foundation.' Send checks to CIPS, attn: Sherry Boone, 25 E. 7th Street, Covington, Kentucky 41011"

These kids deserve to have rings, and I am all for that. My only thought is that didn't the 9th region schools get more money this year than previous from the tourney being at the BOKC? It is my understanding that the first round winners got $1000 and then it increased with each game won. I would think by them winning the region, combined with the increased share, it would help the cause. At the same time, the Cov. district is on state financial watch, along with Newport. Please let us know if an online link is available for donations.

First of all how many rings and for whom? What is the cost of these rings? I would be willing to help setup a golf outting or something like that, Im sure we could get Twin Oaks or Kenton County to help some. How many of you guys would be up for that?

I merely opened this thread to bring attention to a current problem. I know there are a lot of passionate basketball fans that would be willing to help a worthy cause to see that these players get a small reward for their efforts. Nobody said that the overall education system isn't in the same condition, it's a tough economy for everybody. I'm sure there were those that would have been willing to do the same for the football programs had they been made aware of it. If you don't put it out there no one knows about it. What better way than right here on this forum?

The letter that was sent out by the superintendent stating that "state regulations do not allow for school districts to use district funds to finance a reception or purchase any type of commemorative awards".

Thanks for posting this information - We will be making a contribution to the Tom Ellis Foundation. As you also stated, it is tax deductable. Many parents have to purchase championship rings for their sons/daughters in alot of different school districts. I hope the Tom Ellis Foundation will be able to raise enough money to purchase the rings.

It cost a lot of money to go to State. Yes the state helps with the rooms and meal money but it is not enough to cover all costs.
