Good game by both teams. Things to work on, but both should have very solid years. That last pass for Williamsburg that was dropped in the endzone was a very difficult ball to catch. I was right on the home team sideline. The receiver had to catch the ball just inches from the ground and had to lay out to do it. I saw the fumble for a touchdown, and it was a good call. The ball came loose immediately from the hit. Frankfort's running game was getting held in check pretty well by Williamsburg's D the whole night. Frankfort's passing D was having one of the better nights I've seen it have in years against a team that does a good job mixing up pass and run. Didn't give up the big play too often. Hats off to both teams. Riveting game that came down to the last minute. Can't ask for more on a Friday night. Still might have been close if #11 (Hall) had not cramped up in the middle of a play and allowed for a long pass, or if Frankfort hadn't got that long touchdown pass to Tillman in the last seconds of the first half. Could have been 12 - 6 or something.

I am going out on a limb because I didn't even see Williamsburg play last year. I know that district was pretty competitive at the top three spots. But I think the returning skill guys and coaching staff will have Frankfort in a good place tonight. So I will take them over Williamsburg by two touchdowns. 28 - 14 Frankfort for the win.

1 - 3 (in no order): Beechwood - returns many players from their bruising championship team and has a huge Senior class this year. Hazard - hard to beat a good team twice in one year, but with so many returning, I give them the nod over LCA. Lexington Christian - Good enough to play for the game in the final minutes against Beechwood in the championship. Everybody else right now I can't give a strong opinion about. I think those three above stand out as the top three teams to start the season. As for the rest: Mayfield - should improve over the regional final finish last year with some young talent on the rise. Louisville Holy Cross - got handled by Beechwood in the playoffs last year, but who didn't other than LCA? They always have a strong team. Frankfort - lost a great many starters, but the skilled players are there this year as well (as they always are). So the biggest question will be with the O-line. The Pikevilles, Williamsburgs, Racelands, Bellevues, and Campbellsvilles will probably have a say in the top ten as well. I'm too chicken to actually assign anybody a rank.

Nice post. Our program at Frankfort has a good thing going right now. Maybe we can keep it together long enough to build a sustainable program. For now though, we're looking for our first state championship since the program started... which was at least 1923. For clarification, I didn't intend to relate money to the issue. I was just drawing on another "saying" to strengthen clarity of the comment.

Pigman, an suggestion as to which school you think should be designated which sport? Just curious.

Being a successful program is what it takes to be a successful program? Gotcha. No, seriously. Some programs get buy in from all, but don't have the talent, or tradition to sustain it. No bash to successful programs, but it sounds like the "you gotta have money to make money" saying/problem.

That's an intersting idea, Fanofthe11th... I don't think it would go over well with Frankfort alumni (like you said). But I agree that sports programs would probably be stronger overall. What would that solution look like, Franklin Co. and Western Hills splitting the Independent district.. maybe So. Frankfort to Hills and across the river Downtown to County? That would create a strong two school rivalry in sports, although Frankfort (High) fans may be disinterested at the start. I do think that would help Western Hills' (football) program alot to get Frankfort's kids. But as for Frankfort 2008, that's not gonna happen, and while there are some question marks, I see the city championship coming down to the game between County and High. As to who might win at this point, I have no idea.

The athletic kids are there. Need good line play from some inexperienced guys. Need to get good coaches to fill the spots that are missing.

Is the lack of commitment to the program just a result of lack of money available to the school?

I think it's more interesting (for fans and players) to play a team you hadn't played earlier in the season in the first round. That's why I voted "inter." It probably does develop greater rivalries in district if you play intra though - unless there is little competition from district opponents.

Now let's see if we all know the difference between inter and intra. Haha.

Sounds like not many AP people really pay much attention to the award.

I believe last year, the State-Journal reported that Nick Petrino was the third-most vote getter behind Kaelin Ammons (2nd) and Douglas Beaumont (1st). I have no link, only memory of reading the paper. It seems they released the count last year.

Anybody know the other two top vote-getters?

You could hear the bias in voice. Also, one made a comment that Beechwood is a "Public Private School" and that's another can of worms. Always referring to Hayden (of LCA) as the D-Train makes it sound like you eat dinner with the fella. That's not always the case when you call people by their nicknames, but it sounded like he was doing it in a rooting way. It's not like the announcers made a difference in the game, but it was strange to hear them.

Good photos, guru! I guess I also have to say that Beechwood should be super-strong again next year with a Senior class of 21 (from what I hear)! Many small schools would give anything to have class sizes that big on their football teams. They will be a force again. These two teams will probably be pre-season #1 and #2 next year! Fourth and one game on the line. What pressure is there on Beechwood when the game is tied? If I'm an LCA coach I make the same decision to go for it, although I probably run it instead of pass. BW had already blocked a punt so a field goal isn't a sure thing. Statistically running on fourth and one is successful more than 50% of the time right?

It came up in the updates thread, but the webcast announcers didn't do a good job of showing who they were more excited about. Made some rather politically incorrect statements about their opinions on Beechwood as well. I'm really surprised. Maybe they weren't told this was going to be heard outside of Lexington? :confused::confused:

I agree. I don't think anyone at LCA should question the decision to go for it - maybe the play call however. You play to win, not to keep from losing. Great game by LCA. With so many sophomores starting now, I look for LCA to be a title contender for a couple more years, at least. Congrats to Beechwood on your tenth championship - quite an accomplishment.:thumb:

Playcallers for KHSAA webcast definitely need some "sensitivity training."

Pretty sure that guy hosts the scholastic ball report tv show on one of the local Lexington channels. Dissapointing that the play-by-play guy is so biased (for lack of a better word).
