Who is the Lexington 5A team? Lex Cath is 4A right?

Just to add to my above post. Its not like Belfry has NO size. Whetstone, Blackburn, Cisco, etc only play offense correct? I like playing as few of guys possible both ways, but seems like their MAY need to be some adjustments made down the road. Just offering some constructive input as GURU likes so much... Would love to hear others comments.

Sounded like Lawrence o-line controlled the LOS pretty much at will and Belfry tackled poorly. Is anyone concerned about the lack of size up front on defense for Belfry? Holy Cross even controlled the LOS for the first 12 minutes against Belfry. I know it is early, but lack of size and strength doesn't seem like something that you can hope for much improvement upon.

Me too. Belfry just isn't as strong on the defensive front as last season.

Great to hear about new kids stepping up and playing well! Good job Mr. Charles! I "heard" the punting was FAR superior to last season. Thank God. I also heard Thomas Varney look physically stronger. Good to hear. I am also very happy to hear that Timmy Lovern played almost exclusively at SE. IMO, having a real talent like him at SE (even though we RARELY pass) is crucial! When you consider Elkins at QB, Lee and Varney at TB, Dotson at FB, Coleman at TE and now Lovern dedicated to SE, I think that Pirate offense has real weapons all around. I understand a couple O-lineman were out tonight (Blackburn and Cisco?) I am VERY optimistic about a title frankly. I know Coach Haywood and Co. and they will get these kids better every week. The talent is there. Deep in the playoffs a more talented team may await, but Belfry has a very nice chance. Look forward to seeing folks on 8/29 at Shelby Valley

LoL at the Trinity fans. Love you guys. My wife's family is Catholic and they know how to get large groups together and celebrate life like no other group IMO.

I'll echo EKU's post and throw out a couple Belfry homer names. Ivan Lee - I think he could translate to DE on the next level at somewhere like Eastern or Western. Ryan Blackburn - Big strong lineman with the size to play at the next level. Not sure if he has the skill set to play major college football however. Would expect Eastern to at least take a look. I understand why major colleges are reluctant to recruit Belfry. The competition level doesn't always provide a good indicator of talent.

Who will be the backup QB for the Pirates? God forbid Elkins goes down, I was guess Thomas Varney would be the QB and Lovern would move to TB? I know that Frosh QB from last year looked to have some really nice size.

I think they have to be considered "Elite" in Class 3A. but I like your post. It would just be awesome to play great teams from out in the state. For example - playing Newport Central Catholic two years ago. That game was a good measuring stick for alot of people out in the state who don't get to see Belfry play.

BTW, Go Pirates! I am fully behind the program and am looking for a great year! Just being constructive like Guru wants.

Upgrading the schedule is priority #1 in my opinion. I know I am beginning to sound like a broken record on this issue. I know there are difficulties. I just know the community supports the team and the staff. If gas prices REALLY are a major roadblock - lets get creative and put that one behind us. A simple mailer explaining the difficulty and politely asking the community for a $5 donation would net - $2500 at least. ($2500 = enough to offset gas prices)

Gas prices? I get tired of that excuse. If gas prices are an issue, have a open for admission intersquad scrimmage - charged $5 a head and sell concessions. Sell T-shirts etc. This can be done the weekend before the REAL scrimmages and would probably pull in enough scratch to make the difference in gas money to drive to Rockcastle (just an example) as to East Carter. If the "fundraising scrimmage" idea doesn't fit. Then have the team spend a saturday doing a car wash or something to raise the money.

Ryan Blackburn - OT (Belfry) Nice size at around 6'3 300. Big strong kid who moves well for his size. Has the size to play at the next level, but would probably face a sharpe learning curve in pass protection. Not listed on the major recruiting sites.

Belfry's schedule may very well do them in. Central will face a tougher road and might be better off for it. Central was very strong on the defensive LOS last season and IMO had a very nice gameplan in the finals. They did lose a lot of talent and experience on offense though. I would rank Central #1 with Belfry #2.

Campbell seems like a natural MLB.

Sounds like Coleman will step right in where May left off at LB. Dotson is a sure thing there as well. Lets just hope there is a 170 lb running back type who can excel on that D-line in the mold of Hackney and Hickman.

I think this might go on from time to time at the end of the week. Sorta where the parents get some food cooked up - primarily for the benefit of the boys after a hard week of practice. If the fans are just that hardcore, well, I don't particularly have a problem with it as long as they are being respectful and not disruptive.

I like Raceland and Hazard in those matchups. There are a couple others that would be good ballgames but I think are tossups.

I would like to see a 6A championship from a school not from Louisville. Note: I have no problem with Louisville schools and am a fan of keeping private/publics playing together, etc. BUT, I just think it would be a neat "cinderella like" story if a non-louisville team could pull it off.
