article 14th Region Week 6 Review: All "A" Classic Preview, Records Broken.

With Christmas break already over with, it’s time to get back to the games that matter, district and region games. Although it’s early January these district and region games have a lot of meaning as for district seedings and possible region implications. With that said, let’s take a look back at week #6 in the 14^th region.

 

 

1. Breathitt County (6-5): The Bobcats put their #1 ranking on the line this week when they hosted the Commodores of Perry County Central. What a game it was as the Breathitt County Bobcats pulled out a thrilling 45-44 victory to remain unbeaten in region play at 5-0. Senior guard Kyle Fraley led the way with 18 points including three 3’s and five free throws.
   

The Bobcats will take on another set of Bobcats, the Lee County Bobcats that is in the first round of the 14^th region all a classic tomorrow night at 7:45 PM. The winner of that game will host Wolfe County in round two on Wednesday.

 

2. Knott County Central (7-5): Knott County Central came into the week looking to rebound from their horrible Christmas tournament drought and rebound they did as they picked up two good wins, defeating Middlesboro 45-40 and Letcher County Central 63-58 both on the road and both on back to back nights. Those wins snapped a 4 game losing streak and put them back above .500.

 

The Patriots will travel to Cordia tomorrow night to take on the Lions in the first round of the 14^th region all a classic at 7:30 PM. The winner will host Owsley County on Wednesday in round two.

 

3. Perry County Central (5-9): The nightmare continues to get worse for the Commodores. They have now dropped 5 straight games and have lost 7 of their last 8 games. This is one of the worst Perry Central teams that have took court. I suspect that they will go off and put up a big win streak before season’s end.

 

The Commodores have a huge week coming up. They host Owsley County on Thursday (unless Owsley advances in the 14^th region all a classic), travel to North Laurel on Friday and host Anderson County on Saturday. Tough test for the Commodores.

 

4. Hazard (11-3): The Bulldogs continued their dominance where they left off before Christmas as they picked up two big wins last week, both by double digits. 74-60 over Cordia and 75-63 over Wolfe County on the road. Hazard is playing really good ball this season and can go along way in the regional tournament.

 

Hazard will travel to June Buchanan tomorrow night to take on the Crusaders in the first round of the 14^th region all a classic. Winner will host Buckhorn on Wednesday night.

 

5. Letcher County Central (8-6): After a hot 7-2 start to the season the Cougars have took a wrong turn, losing 4 of their last 5 games. Their lone win during the stretch came last week in thrashing fashion as they throttled Leslie County 79-32. The Cougars, however, would lose their next game and it was a big one as they fell 63-58 to Knott County Central 63-58.

 

Letcher County Central will host Phelps on Wednesday night and travel to Powell County on Saturday.

 

6. Buckhorn (11-5): Buckhorn continues to having a great season. They picked up two wins last week to improve to 11-5 on the season. They defeated Red Bird 61-46 and Powell County 62-49. This is a season where Coach Hoskins can make a long run in region if he continues having this kind of success.

 

Buckhorn will be in action Wednesday night on the road playing the winner of Hazard and June Buchanan in round two of the 14^th region all a classic.

 

7. Cordia (2-11): Cordia continues to struggle even though they just snapped their 8 game losing streak but can the 74-52 road win at Sheldon Clark be enough to spark them and get them going down the right side of the track?

 

Cordia will travel to Knott County Central tomorrow night to take on the Patriots in the first round of the 14^th region all a classic.

 

8. Wolfe County (4-9): The losses continue to pile up for Coach Creech and the Wolves. They have now lost 5 of their last 6 games. Their lone win during that stretch came last week when they defeated Lee County by 32, 90-58.

 

Wolfe County will be on the road Wednesday night traveling to either Lee County or Breathitt County in the second round of the 14^th region all a classic.

 

9. Powell County (3-11): Powell County has now lost 6 straight since their 3 game win streak. Buckhorn picked up a 62-49 win over Powell County on Friday and on Saturday the Pirates dropped a 66-62 contest to the Bourbon County Colonels. If this is Coach Fraley’s last season, this is how you don’t wanna see it end like this, even though we still have a long ways to go, he needs to get the ship turned around quick.

 

Powell County will travel to Menifee County on Tuesday, looking to revenge from a season opening 77-72 home court loss to the Wildcats. Powell County will travel 30 minutes up the road on Friday night to take on the Engineers of Estill County in a big district showdown and return home Saturday afternoon for a 2 PM start time against Letcher County Central.

 

10. Leslie County (1-8): This is a season that Coach Rice and the Eagles would like to forget. They have dropped 7 straight and in fact, all fo their losses were not even close. Their closes loss was a 79-54 loss to Hazard.

 

Leslie County will host Jackson City tomorrow night in the first round of the 14^th region all a classic with the winner hosting Riverside Christian. The Eagles could get things turned around with couple wins this week.

 

11. Estill County (2-11): The Engineers had last week off and will return to action on Tuesday night hosting Owsley County in a big 56^th district showdown.

 

12. Owsley County (7-6): Owsley County defeated Lee County 70-56 last week to improve to 7-6 on the season. Owsley County will have a tough test coming up on Tuesday night as they travel to Irvine to take on the Engineers of Estill County in a big 56^th district showdown.

 

13. Jackson City (5-8): After a rough start to the season, the Tigers have now won 3 of their last 4 games on the season. Can they continue that momentum next week when they participate in the 14^th region all a classic?

 

14. June Buchanan (3-10): June Buchanan dropped a heart breaking 74-71 to Prestonsburg, running their losing streak to 6 straight games.

 

15. Lee County (4-13): After picking up their 3^rd and 4^th wins on the season, the Bobcats would drop their next two games, losing 90-58 to Wolfe County and 70-56 to Owsley County. Lee County 8^th grader Zach Watterson broke the schools record for most points scored in a game with 68 in their 104-90 win over Cumberland Home School in the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic.

 

16. Riverside Christian (0-0): No games listed so far. However, they, according to the all a classic website, Riverside Christian is suppose to be taking on the winner of Jackson City and Leslie County in the second round of the 14^th region all a classic.

5:15 PM Semi-Final #2: Lee County/Breathitt County/Wolfe County vs. Cordia/Knott County Central/Owsley County.

4 PM Championship game.
