Best Parental Advice to Give

My son recently finished up his senior year of football. I bought the jersey that he wore in their breast cancer awareness game at the charity auction after the game and my fiancee and he conspired to frame it along with some pictures that she and I took during the season. She also asked him to tell her 5 things that I had taught him about football over the years. This is what he came up with:

1. You get what you work for.

2. Never stay down.

3. The only way you come off of the field is if they carry you off.

4. Leadership is earned through your actions, not through anything you say.

5. As long as you play your hardest I'll always be proud of you.

Over the years I never really imagined that he'd remember all the little things that I tried to teach him. I have to say it got a little bit dusty in the room when I opened my Chrismas present. This might be more of a football thing rather than a life thing but I think a lot of the quotes work for both.

Love your kids for who they are, not what you "want" them to be.

Great advice; particularly in this era when too many parents push their kids to be the next Michael Jordan, Tom Brady or other sports superstars.

The only advice I'd add would be that if you raise your kids to be honest and treat other people decently, life will take care of itself.

The best thing my dad every told me (I don't have kids yet), but his advice was "Son, if I ever find out you've been drinking and driving I swear I will cut it off because you don't need to infect the gene pool of the next generation if your gonna be that stupid."

A couple that have always stuck with me:

1) Respect is not something you deserve or are just given, it's something that's earned.

2) You and only you are responsible for your own actions. Never blame others for your shortcomings.

3) No matter what you do, you'll always have our love and support.

4) Never be ashamed of what you've accomplished and what you have.

5) Every job is an opportunity to something better. There is no such thing as a "bad" job.
