January 10, 201214 yr Faith in common sense. What did you base your statement on? Look at the polling data. Romney consistently underperforms with "born again" and evangelical voters. Santorum is said to be struggling in the South as well. Though he's the most obvious Christian candidate, he's also Catholic. Newt Gingrich outperforms both of them with evangelical voters. It's a legitimate concern.
January 10, 201214 yr I heard on the radio this morning that Romney's approval rating with voters is lower than Obama's. That surprised me. Npr? Do you remember the name of the survey? I believe I heard that on WLW, home of that great Amercan Bill Cunningham. I don't recall the poll/survey they were citing.

Romney won that state when everyone said the evangelical voters won't vote for him. It's a small concern. I don't see it making the impact you're suggesting when the economy is currently tanked.

I don't see it making the impact you're suggesting when the economy is currently tanked. In the last poll before the caucuses Santorum nearly doubled Romney in support from evangelicals. Romney only polled significantly better than Hunstman and Bachmann with evangelical voters there. The vote being split among several candidates helped him tremendously there - he actually received less votes than in '08 when Huckabee beat him (and less votes from registered Republicans this time around).
January 10, 201214 yr Author If they (Paul & Gingrich) were asked about it and they believed the statement was taken out of context, then what do you want them to do? Lie to win the nomination? Something along the lines of, "You'll have to ask Gov. Romney what he meant by that. I know I..." and then go into what their stance on it is...
January 10, 201214 yr The strongest belief of a libertarian is that you regard individual liberty as one of the most, if not the most important important factor of life. That is the main difference in ideologies. I already stated that Obama would prefer social equality over individuality. I was always under the impression that libertarians were fiscally conservative or at least they leaned that way. Ron Paul and Mitt Romney's plans have the same basic fundamentals. Low taxes, more power to the states, reduce spending, reforming entitlement and means tested programs. So I don't think it would be too out there for someone like yourself to vote for Romney. It would be if you voted for Obama. JMO. By individual liberty you mean to be able to MARRY whomever you like - to serve in the military if you wish regardless of your orientation. You mean the liberty of a woman to CHOOSE, with the advice of her doctor what to do with her body. Or are libertarians only concerned about economic freedom?
January 10, 201214 yr Author ^Ace, I really don't get you. Where do you come up with this stuff? Libertarians believe in individual liberties in all aspects (i.e. both financially and socially). Libertarians believe in people being able to marry whomever they choose, they could not care any less about one's sexual orientation, and they definitely aren't looking for an overturn of RvW. As to Marvel's post, I believe he was posting under the assumption that the majority of voters are more concerned about economic/fiscal issues than social issues. I would agree with that.
January 10, 201214 yr If Romney wins the nomination, this will be one of the lowest turnouts in terms of percentage of the electorate in a long time, if not ever.
January 10, 201214 yr Author If Romney wins the nomination, this will be one of the lowest turnouts in terms of percentage of the electorate in a long time, if not ever. I don't think it matters who the nominee is. Americans in general are sick of everything about politics. People are staying home regardless IMO.
January 10, 201214 yr If Romney wins the nomination, this will be one of the lowest turnouts in terms of percentage of the electorate in a long time, if not ever.In other words, just another election.

The evangelicals (and probably the pollsters) should do their homework. Gingrich converted to Catholicism a few years ago.

My point was that Obama falls much more in line with the stuff that I mentioned than any of the Republicans do. So who is the more libertarian of the bunch? I understand what a libertarian believes. The issue is that folks want to believe that Republicans are closer to that than Dems are and that is simply not the case. It is always on an issue by issue basis.
January 10, 201214 yr The evangelicals (and probably the pollsters) should do their homework. Gingrich converted to Catholicism a few years ago. Good point. I think it makes some sense though in that Santorum wears his religion on his sleeve and it's hard to dissociate that from his Catholicism.

You mean the liberty of a woman to CHOOSE, with the advice of her doctor what to do with her body. Or are libertarians only concerned about economic freedom? I don't consider myself a libertarian but I agree with the first two postions. They are libertarian positions but also considered liberal. Socially, libertarians and liberals fall in the same category on a few issues. To the last example, its my belief that someone has to stick up for the innocent organism inside a womens body when she made the decision (most of the time) to have sex. I don't want to get off topic but I think that is a libertarian belief to stick up for others liberty when they cannot.
January 11, 201214 yr Gallup had a poll today showing that Romney is an acceptable candidate to both 59% of conservative republicans and 59% of liberal/moderate republicans. I believe he was the only candidate over 50% for both. Of course that doesn't mean they'll come out to vote for him.
