How would Scruggs be eligible to play next year? Is it a year from the date of your last game, or a year from the end of the entire regular season? I know Scruggs didn't play the last few weeks for Holmes.

I don't think the rules are different at private schools. I have to believe Holy Cross ran the Campbell situation by the KHSAA. They obviously did with Pouncy because he wasn't allowed to play the first few games of the football season. I never heard the reasoning on how the KHSAA decided he was able to play this year though. I think the KHSAA needs to make it known publicly how they are arriving at these decisions so everyone understands the rules and how the KHSAA interprets them.

We don't need to know every detail. But at least a general statement - e.g. Player's family moved into district.

 

I am inclined to suggest a rule change. Any player with varsity experience who transfers is ineligible for 25% of the season, only exception being player's family moved more than 50 miles. If it truly is for other reasons besides sports, the player will transfer anyway. If sports are truly the driving force behind the move, player will think long and hard about whether it is worth it. If it is worth it to that extent, then let them transfer. This removes some subjectivity from the KHSAA, although they still could rule a player ineligible for an entire season. I could even see a tiered approach being better. These only apply to players with varsity experience:

 

Freshman - Ineligible for 75% of sophomore sports season.

Sophomore - Ineligible for 50% of junior sports season.

Senior - Ineligible for 25% of senior sports season.

 

The only exception is if the player's family moves 50 miles or more.

I don't have a problem w/ Campbell being eligible in KY coming from Ohio. That has happened for years w/ Cincy kids bouncing back and forth from Ohio to Newport and Holmes due to family situations. My question is w/ Scruggs moving down the street and being eligible right away.

Minority grants in aid from the diocese, has been a boon for Holy Cross the last couple of years, plus hiring some staff people with connections.

It just doesn't seem right that the catholic schools can get away with things that the others can not. If that is indeed the case.

From what I have heard the Campbell kid who is a stud hoops player is actually living or was living with Pouncy. I know its all legit due to it being a Catholic school but "Come on Man ! "

I would be shocked if HC actually recruited him. I believe that it is more that the kid loves football, looked around and saw that Holmes wasn't where he wanted to play. HC is close and just won the state championship. I believe the chance to play for a state contender recruited him, not coaches. I don't blame him, but he'd have to sit for a year? Correct?

Im sure NCC's Coach Eviston doesnt like this news. NCC will have their hands full next year with Pouncy/Beal and Scruggs. This Scruggs kid is a dominant running back and if you put Pouncey at QB and Beal/Scruggs in the backfield.....they could repeat as State Champs.

What is the criteria? He isn't leaving Newport. He's leaving Holmes. I didn't think that Holmes was too terribly bad academically.

If you want to be challenged academically, I believe Holmes has the only International Baccalaureate in Northern Kentucky.

 

On the flip side, Covington Schools have been put on watch by the state if I am not mistaken. So I guess you could play that angle.
