The difference is that I don't buy the right to a quiet flight. I do buy a space to sit in.

If that man would have "accidentally fallen" when they hit some turbulence it would be a law suit so fast it would make your head spin.

How common can it be that someone THIS big is on a packed flight? Can they dedicate a couple of seats to large passengers? They don't get a ticket for them but can be placed in them when they arrive, if necessary?

 

And for now no, I don't think they need to put a cage around them, but I'm not completely against that.

I don't think it'd be near the problem for the "Clyde's" out there if the airline didn't try to pack people in like sardines. A wider seat would go a long way for all.

What do you mean? I would sit in my seat and probably make conversation with the other person. If I've bought a ticket and I have to be somewhere, I'll just make do. What's the alternative? I'm not going to ask that another passenger who bought his/her be kicked off.

Some people are obese to the point where you may not be able to safely sit in your seat and buckle your belt. If that is the case they have to buy another seat if for no other reason to protect you. Just because something is subjective - and I really do hear where you are coming from - it does not mean we ignore the problem all together.

Heavens no! I don't hate babies! I just feel that if you're going to complain about obnoxiousness on a plane, there are many examples, even after you kick all the fat people off.

 

For the record, I don't think you hate babies. I just enjoy reading emotional posts evidenced by the use of exclamation points.

Then, the argument I could get behind is that if they cause a safety issue, they can be removed from a flight. But that's not the argument here.

If the airline wants to provide travel for a customer of that size, it's up to them to do so in a manner that is safe and accomodating for everyone. If you don't want to accomodate a person that large, don't do business with them.

Being serious now, I agree with an earlier post about the purchase of a ticket representing the purchase of space on the plane, not a cost of admission. Since airlines are now charging for checked luggage, I don't know why it is so wrong to charge extra especially in cases where the obese passenger in question would be infringing upon the comfort of the other passengers. Yes, I know there are other factors that can ruin a passenger's flight, but the physical infringement of one passenger upon another is simply not fair in my opinion.

How so? It's no less lame, than you suggesting the person NOT at fault be liable for the person at fault.

I don't see it as being subjective. You make a model and you either are in your space or you aren't...very simple.

 

When you purchase a seat, you purchase THAT seat, not your seat and half of the one beside you.

I may have a better argument, but I think that is actually is not even an argument, because it includes more than fat people. Tall people who take up the aisle space or other passengers leg room for their own legs, for instance.

 

Frankly, I don't think airplanes are comfortable at all, and I'm not obese..plump, but not obese. The seats are not big enough to sit comfortably, there's not enough leg room even for a person 5-3, like me. My knees ache, my back aches, and the whole flying experience is something I avoid unless there is absolutely no reasonable alternative...i.e. I have to go on a work trip.

Nobody is saying that airlines are comfortable. But that doesn't excuse someone from heavily infringing on the space I purchased.

I fly quite a bit and I barely have enough room just for myself. I'm 6'3 180 pounds. I usually request the emergency exit because you get so much more leg room otherwise its uncomfortable. I have never had to sit next to someone who is big enough to take up space but I think the airlines need to make the seats a bit bigger all around. That said, people who take up more than one seat need to purchase the seats they are taking away from other passengers. Yeah its sad that the person has overweight issues but its also sad that a guy had to stand during a 7 hour flight when he paid his fair share.
