I like the way Southwest's policy sounds. Seem pretty fair to me. Southwest is the main airline I fly.

I'm paying for my seat and the area surrounding it that is to be considered my seat. If I'm next to someone who is obese and encroaching on my space, then I feel that I am within my rights to ask for some type of refund since I am not able to use my seating area. I'm a larger than normal individual (6'0" 220lb with broad shoulders) and I understand it's not easy or comfortable to fly.

 

Yes, you risk alienating a portion of the population. But Aside from people with medical conditions, sometimes it is something like being told you can't fly cause you're too big that will be the catalyst for a lot of people to lose weight. With the way our society's waistline is growing, hurting a few people's feelings might not be that bad of a thing.

 

I've lost about 70 lbs. and at no time did I consider air travel in my decision to do it. I still purchase 2 seats, 3 when Mrs. S travels with me, as I have stated in other threads about this. I'm still not svelte and I have always fit into the seat and can buckle up with no spillage into the next, even when I was over 300. I don't like people touching me, like to relax and spread work out, if need be, and unlike coldweatherfan, I do not like to check bags. With the extra seat I get the extra carry-ons. On most flights, 2 seats are still cheaper than business or first class. Of course, with Southwest you have no choice.

I'm not arguing the business side of it, just the human side of it. Much like Rockmom is.

So, for those of you who don't feel they should have to buy two tickets, you'd have no problem standing the entire flight because Joe Schmo takes up his and your seat?

You take up 2 seats, you buy 2 seats. Like anything else. Eat 2 entree at a restaurant, pay for 2 entrees. Pay for what you use. Sorry if it singles you out from the group. Life isn't fair. I have obese people in my family and they are in the same boat as the rest of us on here. Pay for what you use.

You order a coffee from McDonald's. You are ordering a hot cup of coffee. They give you a cup of coffee that is cold. Are you just going to go about your business with the cold cup of coffee, because after all it's McDonald's, so it's not going to be a good cup of coffee to begin with, or are you going to ask them to give you what you paid for?

 

This is the same thing. You paid for an alotted amount of space, you should be given that space free of any infringement from a fat passenger.

You could always just "Occupy" the lavatory and explain to everyone that it's the only seat available.

Sure I could. Logically, if I were seated prior to his attempting to take his seat, I would be occupying the space he may "spill over" into. Either he fits into the space left, albeit potentially oozing over some, or he doesn't. But unless I were the person taking a seat after he'd been seated, then the laws of physics apply.
