Why aren't Lexington's public schools better at football?

Featured Replies

Obviously, it's a question a lot of us ask on here, and we all have our own theories.

But Mike Fields is asking now in this story on the H-L site.

Are there junior football leagues in Lexington?

it's Mumme's fault

I thought that one was funny too. He's been gone how long now? News flash, some very good and successful programs kind of throw the ball around a lot.

I saw a couple of post in the comments section bringing up the X and T issue. Before the big Lex public schools worry about X and T and their advantages (real or imagined), they should first be regularly beating the other public schools on their schedules (some of which are even smaller than they are).

The reasons told to me by Lex people in the know, as to why football at the big public Lex schools is so bad, are:

1. poor to terrible middle school football program; and

2. soccer has become the sport of choice in Lex high school athletics.

The Fayette County School Board is blamed for both according to what I've been told. Total lack of committment to football. The article indicates that may be changing. Hopefully it is. But it's not going to mean success overnight even it is happening.

Great article by Mike that should have probably been ran years ago.

I've wondered this a lot too, considering how big Fayette County is.

I heard the same thing about "the administration's lack of interest in football." I believe one of these administrators is now a superintendent at Nelson County. :ohbrother:

Not sure about the commitment from the admin, but hasn't all of the LexPublic schools received new turf fields over the last few years? or were these just new turf soccer fields that get usedfor football on Fridays? either way that is a pretty big $$$ commitment to football.

The 7th grade KYMSFA semi-finals were held at Lafayette HS. Some of the local public shool parents supporting the function and watching expressed surprise at the level of play. Motion before the snap, screen passes, pulling linemen, blitzes. These are apparently things not taught at the MS level in Fayette based on their reaction.

The coaching carousels need to stop at the schools to let them get their feet under them. Then the coaches need help in helping the feeder system.

All are multi-purpose (soccer, football, lacrosse) and all are used for football. Lafayette was the last one and theirs was finished in October of last year.

I was told by a middle coach couple years ago they were not allowed to play outside the city and they only played 6 games and then had a tourney for the top 4 teams. Can some who knows more comment on this. I think he said they couldnt start practice until school started.

The middle school programs are so bad. Sports was really never an emphasis on sports in Fayette County.

There are 2 private schools in LCA and Lex Cath that field competitive teams pretty consistently. Are some of the better athletes from the other schools transfering to one of these once they start HS or even in middle school. That may explain a little, but, with as many students as these other schools still have, I can't imagine that would have that big an impact. Even losing good kids, you'd think there were still plenty out there to field solid teams.

Like everyone always says it has to be coaching, reason is the kids are all good, just ask their parents.

I think kids are just more lazy and more to do now days.

Every kid in Lexington is lazy? No kids in Scott County or Jessamine County or Garrard County or any of the surrounding counties are? While I will admit that some probably are lazy and there are more things to do now than 30 years ago, those same opportunities are available everywhere - not just Lexington.

And if that is the case, why are city baseball teams all so good?

Not to turn this thread, because I know these comments I'm about to make might get taken the wrong way, but in baseball, every kid gets to swing a bat, no matter what position they play. In basketball, every kid gets to shoot the ball in practice. I played all three through high school, and there weren't many times I didn't enjoy going to baseball or basketball practice. However, there were plenty of 90+ degree days where the football practice field was the last place I wanted to be, but I loved and wanted what I/we were working towards more than those other sports.

It's like in June, where basketball and baseball get to play umpteenmillion games (be them school or aau affiliated, it doesnt matter, they are still playing), it's hard to fight or not understand why a kid would rather go play a basketball game or baseball game instead of coming to lift and run for football when they don't "have to".
