October 18, 201115 yr The University of Louisville has approved a seven-year contract extension for Football Coach Charlie Strong. http://www.wdrb.com/story/15721452/u-of-l-approves-7-year-contract-extension-for-charlie-strong I think it's a little early yet, but I'm not overly surprised. If you think he's your guy, lock him up.
October 18, 201115 yr Author They had Petrino locked up, too, allegedly. If you think he's your guy, lock him up as best you can*.
October 18, 201115 yr This seems somewhat similar to the extenison the Charlie Weis received during his first season at Notre Dame. Hopefully Strong will have more success than Weis.
October 18, 201115 yr I'm not necessarily against it... but the timing is odd... I feel the same way.
October 19, 201115 yr Maybe Coach needs to fire another coach. I hated saying this, I like Coach Strong, but the coach's replacement (OC) had three field goals against the Bearcats, the same almost against the Tarheels. Just not right.
October 19, 201115 yr This seems somewhat similar to the extenison the Charlie Weis received during his first season at Notre Dame. Hopefully Strong will have more success than Weis.If I remember Weis's extension came just after the USC "Bush-Push" loss en route to a BCS game. A lot of positive vibe going on at the time. While there is some positive vibe with Strong, there are still a lot of questions.
October 19, 201115 yr This might have been done to give an impression of stability to conference suitors.
October 19, 201115 yr 2+ Milion per year? College football is getting out of hand. I don't dislike Strong, but WOW that's a lot of money. You cannot buy a national championship (unless you are USC). I think UL should just accept the fact that they are a stopping place for coaches who want to move on to the Big Ten or SEC. Find the next up and coming coach who will work his butt off for $500,000 and put the remaining 2 million into a mutual fund to pay the next basketball coach!
October 19, 201115 yr ^ I think they do and that's exactly why they did this. They know the bigger name schools are looking to poach from the others. If Louisville gets better next year and better again the year after that, then if some school comes calling with two or three years left on Strong's contract, they'll have to pay Louisville's buyout.
October 19, 201115 yr I'm indifferent on this as a Cards fan. I think it's great for the program and for Coach Strong. However, as a honest fan, I'm not sure I would have signed a 7-year deal until I knew what was going to happen as far as the Big East or joining another conference. I would hate to spend the next 7 years in a non-BCS conference (the way the Big East is heading) and I would hate to kick my head kicked in for the next 7 years if they decided to join to Big 12.
October 19, 201115 yr I'm not necessarily against it... but the timing is odd... I agree. Let's also be honest...contracts for coaches really don't mean crap anymore.
