I am really starting to question some of the minor league coaching of the Red's organization on fundamentals. Stubbs comes to the majors unprepared on several fronts. He has unquestionable speed but can't lay a bunt down to save his life. He can run down a fly ball with the best of them but can't come in on a ball or go back on one hit straight over his head. Yonder Alonso can flat out hit but there appears to be no place for him to play defensively. What are the minor league coaches doing with the talent that our franchise has accumulated? This is really starting to concern me a bit.

The clueless Dusty led Reds are closing in on baseball's genius Tony LaRussa and the National League's greatest franchise the Cardinals for second place. Surely clueless Dusty can't lead his crew of underperformers and AAA call ups past the whiners for a second year in a row?

No but you can drill it through their heads enough that they have to learn something. Is too much emphasis put on winning at the lower levels when it should be put on instruction? If they don't want to learn the fundamentals then maybe they don't see the field as often as they think they should.

Bunting is a lost art. You just don't see many people who can do it successfully anymore on a regular basis. There is plenty of blame to go around, but it's impossible to teach someone something that they don't want to learn.

 

As for teaching Alonso a defensive position, you can't learn speed and being an athlete, you're either born with it or you're not..for the most part.

On a side note it looks like Stubbs is going to come up short in his quest to break the single season strikeout record held by Mark Reynolds. He currently has 170 strikeouts in 129 games. If he plays all 32 remaining games that puts him on a pace for 212 strikeouts, 11 short of Reynolds record of 223. On the bright side it does look like he will become the 2nd player to ever strikeout over 200 times in a season joining Reynolds who has done it 3 times. I was really hoping he would get the record.

Don't count him out yet. He's pretty good at striking out.

Minor league coaches do what they're told by the GM and other front office people.
