The few times I have seen him around he is very approachable. It was funny listening to Curt Schilling rip him when ESPN was talking a lot about umpires.

He has been playing in the OF this year in the minors? Just because they did it doesn't mean they did it well. Bottom line is they can hide him somewhere if he keeps hitting that's all I am saying.

They didn't try him in the outfield until last year, and we've seen how well that seems to have worked out.

 

Bottom line ... if you're drafted as a first baseman and stuck there as soon as you start playing pro ball, that's a good indication that your team doesn't think you're capable of playing another position.

That's fine if they can get that but I am skeptical someone will trade us something of value at either position for him. Playing him at third pretty much eliminates his lack of speed. With some work you have to believe he can figure out how to get some ground balls.

 

I keep hearing everybody say that Alonso can't run, he is slow as molasses, he has no speed. How on Earth was he able to steal 6 bases this year @ Louisville in 11 attempts and 9 in 10 the year before if he can't run? Granted he looks like Adam Dunn when he runs but I just don't know where this total lack of speed thing comes from. Is Dusty stereotyping him as big and slow and unable to play defense? We didn't hear a lot of this from Rick Sweet when he was down there. Dusty pinch runs pitchers for him albeit good athletes in Arroyo, Leake or Wood but what is up with this lack of any speed thing anyway? Has anybody watched him day in and day out @ Louisville that can give us some idea of what he really looks like while on the bases. Personally I watched him go 1st to 3rd the other night and he reminded me of Dunner but I didn't see him as running like Ryan Hanigan or Ramon Hernandez in doing it.

You have to think SF is still interested in aquiring him. They need a little offense in their lineup and can use a catcher.

The Alonso in left field fiasco is befuddling to say the least. I don't know if it is a speed issue as much as it is incompetence by Alonso. I guess in Louisville they just kept hoping he would start to get better at some point. But I think every game he has played in LF with the Reds he has made at least one bad play and those misplays have usually led to runs being scored against the Reds.

 

The other thing that gets me about Alonso coming up is how everyone just assumed he was brought up to start and play in left field and kept jumping Dusty because he wasn't playing. I said all along and still believe that when they brought Alonso up, the plan was not for him to play every day in left. I think the plan was for him to be a left handed bat off the bench. At the time he came up the Reds were still well within range of first. I think they brought Alonso up to help win games in the late innings and free up playing Fred Lewis in left more. Did anyone ever say Alonso was coming up here to start? No. The sports talk people (broadcasters and listeners) all just assumed he was coming up to start and then went crazy when they were wrong.

 

By the way, on the speed topic, Adam Dunn stole 19 bases his second year in the majors so it isn't like he was a total plodder either.

Let's hope he can hit enough to use that speed. My big thought is that if they don't teach this kid to bunt they are not doing their jobs as coaches.

Will Stubbs ever learn to go back and come in on a flyball? He does fine on everything else but he sure looks bad on balls straight over his head and balls that drop 3-4 feet in front of him.
