August 24, 201115 yr Alonso is confusing me though....I mean we were all told that he wasn't anything special offensively, so what gives?

August 24, 201115 yr Well, if you're going to base it on 29 at-bats ... Can't have any fun anymore on here.
August 24, 201115 yr If they can add someone in LF that is RH and can hit a little bit the lineup could be really nasty next year assuming Alonso continues to hit and they pick up the option on BP.
August 24, 201115 yr Great speculation, but aren't we forgetting Rolen? I was hoping he would retire but I don't think it's very likely.
August 24, 201115 yr "johnfayman: RT @DKnobler: Most interesting name going on waiver wire today: Ramon Hernandez of Reds//Interesting indeed" "johnfayman: Baker on playing Alonso at third: There's a chance. I'd like to get him in in a blowout. It depends on situation. #Reds"

August 24, 201115 yr That's fine if they can get that but I am skeptical someone will trade us something of value at either position for him. Playing him at third pretty much eliminates his lack of speed. With some work you have to believe he can figure out how to get some ground balls. He played first base in college, was drafted as a first baseman and didn't play another position until it was obvious that Rolen was entrenched there. If the Reds really thought Alonso was capable of playing another position, he would have been there from the time he was drafted.

It's not like they have done a good job handling this situation so I am not so sure about that.
August 24, 201115 yr It's not like they have done a good job handling this situation so I am not so sure about that. They knew they had Votto at first base when Alonso was drafted. You don't think that if Alonso was capable of learning another position, the Reds would have tried him somewhere else?
August 24, 201115 yr Maybe they'll waive him after he catches game 1.Hernandez has already been waived, evidently ... it takes three days to pass through waivers. If no one claims him, the Reds are free to deal him elsewhere. If a team is awarded the claim, the Reds have 48 hours, I think, to make a deal.
