August 5, 201115 yr It's deja vu all over again ... game after game, same problems from the same players, get behind, stay close, can't get the clutch hit, bullpen gives them an insurance run, the Reds come back again, they battle every night till the end ... close, but they just can't get it done.

And that's against two of the worse teams in the league. 1-3 so far on this trip is abysmal.
August 6, 201115 yr Author Marty was ripping this team over their lack of fundamentals. Like it or not, Dusty needs to accept some of the blame. They are lifeless.
August 6, 201115 yr It's Dusty's fault that guys who played multiple years in the minors can't get a bunt down? It's Dusty's fault that the guy he admitted can't play left field, in fact, can't play left field. Don't get me wrong, he could run some guys through some bunt stations or PFP's but at this point if they can't do it, you can't put it ALL on him. This isn't Little League. These guys take 100's of swings per day and most refuse to work on bunting. As everyone has stated, they are adults and professionals. No way someone needs to be taught how to bunt, field a bunt, run the bases, or swing at good pitches in their late 20's in the show. They should know how to do that before they get there. At least give him credit for something. While everyone wanted to see Alonso out there, he doesn't seem to be very good.

August 6, 201115 yr Because he's a very below average pitcher. It's not surprising at all though. The Reds have made a career out of making bad pitchers look unhittable. You hit the nail on the head. This team of recent history has never been able to handle what appears on paper to be beatable pitchers, especially young pitchers. At best they get them late after struggling 4, 5 or 6 innings against them. I have often wondered if its preparation or just the fact that they are young, Personally I get tired of defending the "young" option. They are at this level for a reason and should be able to handle the pitching or they shouldn't be here.
August 6, 201115 yr In the grand scheme of things, Alonso's misplay didn't change a thing. Both runs would have scored on the next pitch anyway. He also had a third of the teams hits today. It seems funny to me that everyone all of a sudden seems to forget how bad Joey Votto looked at first base when he first came up. He scared me to death just watching him field grounders and throws to first. Lately the talk has been that he is a gold glove caliber first baseman and I admit outside of some of the lacksadasical throws he has made lately he can and usually does make the majority of the plays over there. I think he will only get better with experience if he can ever exercise some of the mental demons that he occassionally seems to have show up. We need to give Alonso a chance and by all means Dusty does as well. He did not play all that badly at Louisville and only has had 1/2 a season to learn the position. There are and will be much worse outfielders in the league because you need hitters in the lineup. Personally I think the Red's management has already resigned themselves to the fact that Votto is out of here after his contract and they don't want to trade Alonso because of this.
August 6, 201115 yr I don't mind giving Alonso a chance any more because IMO it is over. There just isn't enough talent nor enough time to catch the leaders. So who cares if he costs the team another game in LF, he needs to play to get better. He obviously is NOT ready to play LF in the majors though, so all you people ranting about why Dusty didn't play him, unfortunately Alonso has proven that decision to be a good one. Defense is the most underrated aspect in baseball. It won the reds a division title last year. Alonso has started two games and has exhibited terrible defense in both that cost the Reds runs if not the ball game. If I felt the Reds still had a chance, I would be screaming bloody murder if Dusty started Alonso one more game in LF, but it doesn't matter anymore.

He has yet to cost the team a game with his play in LF. Defense is important, but it didn't win them the division. Hitting with RISP and pitching won the division, neither of which the Reds are doing this season.
