Just because he is slow doesn't mean that he isn't quick on the reflexes. If he has the arm, who knows? Scott Rolen is no speed merchant and he is great at 3B. Of course, it would have been nice to have worked on this while he was in Louisville. Makes me wonder a little ....
August 4, 201115 yr As they continue to stink, I think that you can plug most folks that are remotely athletically inclined into first base, I say you package Alonso this offseason with whomever and see if you can't upgrade your roster with someone who can A. Hit B. Run C. Throw and put them in left field for the next few seasons. Assuming such a trade exists. While I may have argued otherwise previously, I think you hang on to Votto until he bails or we deal him prior to his FA and it surely has to be easier to find a firstbase candidate.
August 4, 201115 yr Dusty isn't aloof. He has held team meetings to try and get things shook up and/or focused. When you can't execute on the field, you look lethargic, unenthusiastic, aloof, _______ (insert similar adjective here). I see guys trying every night but they can't get it done. The fact is the Reds just aren't getting it done on the field. Their hitting with runners in scoring position is horrible and basically costs them game after game after game. You say play Alonso but the one game he started, he contributed to the loss more than anyone by not being able to catch the ball in left field. They have to pinch run for the guy when he gets pinch hits late in games. The guy is the reincarnation of Sean Casey. Would you want Sean Casey in left field? You're right, he was brought up here to hit ... not play in the field. He is the left handed bat late in games and he is doing a nice job of that. He is not the answer in left and I don't think he was brought up to be the answer in left. The only way to salvage this road trip is to sweep Chicago. At a minimum, the Reds needed to win these two series (4-2) if not sweep one and win the other (5-1). Lose one game in Chicago and these two series are disasters. Dusty is aloof as they come. I would like to be a fly on the wall for his team meetings. I bet they rank right up there with Ozzie Guillen's , "NOT". As for Alonso being pinch run for I'd like to know what the deal is there. He has to be having problems with his lower half or something for Dusty to pull him. He is not a bad runner, he even stole 6 bases @ Louisville before his callup and 9 last year. I think that there is something going on with him. Arroyo is a good athlete but doesn't get on base enough to be considered a great baserunner imo. If there is nothing wrong with Alonso then he is being typecast as a DH and they would have traded him by now if that was the case.

You either just aren't paying attention, don't know the meaning of the word aloof or are so committed to trashing Dusty that you are going to believe what you want to believe regardless of facts. Dusty's players all love him. He has a reputation as being a players manager. If you are "aloof" that doesn't happen. August 4, 201115 yr Author To me, I think the team looks disinterested at times. Watching Votto make the lollipop throws and side-saddling of ground balls of ground balls shows me laziness or that his head is not in the game. I don't think Dusty is aloof or disinterested but his team plays like it. You can have all the team meetings you want and after a while they are a waste of time, unless you back up what you say. They have needed a shakeup for a while and nothing has seemed to take hold. Their breakdowns in concentration and lack of fundamentals at times is incredulous. Knowing the scouting report, attention to detail...those sorts of things are missing this year and they continually make the same mistakes over and over. Dusty's insistence on playing vets over younger guys is grating. The stubbornness of not doing anything with LF and SS through May and June hurt this club. The back of the baseball card don't lie. I still don't see what playing Lewis over Alonso does for them. They simply have not handled success well at all, and do not seemingly have that fire they had last year. They all seem to think it was only a matter of time and that the worm would turn. Even the manager said as much. I also think they have guys that need to make some hitting adjustments. Bruce has got to go to the plate thinking of hitting the ball right up the middle or to the left side. Same with Votto and he has done that over the last couple of weeks.

August 5, 201115 yr I saw this on the web. More proof of how inept Alonso is in left and why he isn't getting PT: Yonder Alonso began taking ground balls at third base on Tuesday. "Maybe I can get in there and, obviously, it will give me more value to the team if I can do that," Alonso said. "Third base was my position growing up. It comes easier than the other two positions." Alonso is 3-for-8 at the plate since being called up on July 26, but he's started just one game, so we're fine with whatever will get his bat in the lineup more often. The Reds are looking for alternatives at the hot corner following Scott Rolen's shoulder surgery. He isn't getting playing time in left because Dusty wants to play Lewis and Hesiey righty/lefty. In fairness to Lewis he has been hot lately but does he have a future here? Imo Alonso should be the lefty part of that platoon. His willingness to workout at 3rd and the team's decision to do the same tells me that they don't have a clue what they want to do. They have Frazier up and he's played all over the infield in the minors as well as left field. If they need another 3rd baseman then they should go down and bring Francisco up off his rehab assignment and see if he is the future. Jettison Janish back down and Cairo can be the backup to Renteria who has been seeing most of the action at short.

We ripped on Houston playing minor leaguers but right now the Reds are just a step above that. Plus 2 of the regulars (Stubbs, Bruce) have been very inconsistent through their young careers. Hammer Dusty all you want but that is a tough lineup to win consistently with.

He does not do the things that you want a 2 hitter to do. You can bet that if Stubbs gets on with 0 outs Dusty will bunt him over. Janish can do that sometimes. I would quit fooling with Janish and let Renteria play 4 or 5 days a week and let Cairo spell him and bring Juan Francisco up. If Janish is going to learn to hit he needs to play everyday and that learning should be at Louisville.
