What teams from the west have a chance to be the team the winner from the east faces in the State Finals? Seems like a done deal for Highlands if they can make it past the gauntlet of JC, CCH, Boyle or LexCath.

I wouldn’t put money on anyone from the west beating Highlands, but Lone Oak and Madisonville are both pretty talented this year from what I understand.

As Guru stated, Highlands is the team with the best chance of stopping Highlands' run for 5 championships. We've all seen powerhouse teams lose to teams who were far outmatched through the years. I've seen injuries lock away teams' championship hopes, I've seen coaching errors doom a few teams, and everybody knows that there are occasions which, for one reason or another, teams decide to show up at games without their heads where they need to be.

 

If you want to look at the teams that could most easily capitalize on any of those scenarios, I would point you at Boyle County, Johnson Central, or my Cov Cath Colonels:

• I think all three of those teams are coached excellently, although I would have to say that I feel Boyle outweighs JC and Cov Cath as far as natural talent goes. Still, I think the fact that Boyle hasn't played against Highlands in the last 6 years weighs heavily against them. They may well end up with two shots at beating Highlands, during the season, but I'm not sure that it will be enough.
  
• Johnson Central has one of the best running offenses I have ever seen with Jude in the backfield, although their passing game and defense will have to play flawlessly to get by Highlands. Having been sent home the last two seasons by Highlands, Johnson Central will be highly motivated, but I'm just not sure that that will be enough.
  
• I think Cov Cath is poised to really bring back their yearly threat to Highlands' run at state titles, but I'm not sure that this year is their year that we will see them knock the Bluebirds out. A lot of folks outside the Highlands and Cov Cath programs may not understand how the rivalry between these two teams is as much of an equalizer as it is, but I think those who follow either or both of the programs closely wouldn't underestimate the significance of the rivalry factor. Highlands obviously has much more talent than Cov Cath, but take a look at the '97 teams and you'll see that the less talented team can clearly win the game when properly motivated.

And for JC, it's three years now if I remember correctly. The two games held @ JC were both great, with the 2010 version an awesome example of high school football.

Highlands is a very talented team but winning a 5th will be a monumental task especially with this schedule. If they win this year, they should be regarded as one of the greatest Bluebird teams in their storied history.

Don't forget Donovan McCoy is the backup and he is a gamebreaker. He would start for most teams around the state. But I agree, if PT is healthy he will light up the scoreboard and put up huge numbers this year.

Not sure, but he is probably the best athlete on the team.. The kid can flat out get it done at whatever he does..
