Those guys probably would have found SOMETHING destructive anyways.

I couldn't agree more. That is the point I am trying to make.

But you just made his point...

Gateway.

No. Because I think the point he is saying is that if they had been introduced to coke before weed would that make coke the gateway drug? Circumstance is all he is saying.

Maybe weed is the gateway to obesity. Smoking a little weed than eating a few belly bombs at 2:30 a.m. Makes sense to me.

You must be reading a different post than the one I made. I'm saying that certain people have destructive, addictive personalities and they will find SOMETHING (be it drugs, sex, religion, Big Macs, etc)...

The fact that they have or have not smoked pot has no bearing on that. To me pot is considered a gateway just because it's easy to get.

That's what I meant when I was saying that people who do coke probably have smoked weed because it's usually available first. I've seen weed more than 100 times in my life. I've never seen coke at a party at UK once in my entire life. Circumstances...Obviously I'm not so naive to believe that it doesn't go on around campus, but going out every single weekend 2-3 times per week and never seeing it once says something to me.

I think some people on this thread need to just sit back, relax and light one up.

If weed is such a "gateway drug" like some folks have in their heads, then this board must be littered with cokeheads and meth addicts. Probably awash with crackheads too.

:thumb: If pot is a "gateway drug", then I guess would alcohol be one too. Heck, kids spinning around in a circle must be a gateway as well.

As far as the gateway drug I'm not really sure. Most of you guys know I'm from Carter County, which if it isn't drug central in KY it is close. Every single person I know from here that is on pills, meth or anything hard started out as a pot head. This is especially true for people around my age.

However, I think that it is more of an addictive personality for most of these people rather than a gateway drug. Also, I think drugs are just overly easy to get in CC. The High Schools have cleaned up a little bit, but when I was in school kids brought, sold and bought all kinds of stuff at school.

I can't really say from my experience that pot was a gateway drug for many of the people I know because I think it is different for everyone. For some I think it definitely is, because I think it makes the transition to harder substances easier. Some people never have the urge to do anything harder. In a college setting at MSU, I think most of the people I know didn't use it as a gateway drug and if they did they didn't stay in school very long. However to the orginal question, I'd much rather have my kids smoke because I lived 20 years in a drug infested community and hated it.

So are cigarettes a gateway drug to weed? Does smoking cigarettes "make the transition to a harder substance" easier?

I think the “gateway drug” things boils down to one of two things: First, the argument is that some people are chasing more illicit activities or highs, and marijuana is the first step on that path. If this is the case, then what isn’t a gateway drug? It seems like alcohol would be the obvious candidate. I also seem to remember cigarettes being the “gateway drug” de jour when I was in grade school. Or, second, the “information” fed to the youth about marijuana is so preposterous that when they realize it, they believe similar scaremongering about actually addicting drugs are false. What else could this “gateway drug” thing mean?

Real tough question. Cigarettes can develop into a lifelong habit. Weed can bring about bad decisions. I would go with cigarettes being slightly better solely because they don't provide as much of a head change.

Forget the level of effectiveness. That's not in question. It's about what's worse for you in general, or for your child if you're answering the thread's question.
