If I had to pick one, it would be cigarettes. It's honestly a no-brainer for me. Weed is a gateway drug. For those of you who say otherwise, go to a NA meeting and ask anyone there. While there are people who don't make the jump into other drugs, there are more than a few people who do. I'd rather run the risk of my kid having to overcome an addiction to cigarettes than to other drugs...

Then I guess you don't want them to ever drink either, you didn't mention alcohol so I'll assume that.

As for those that go to NA meetings, they're people with additive personalities so naturally they'll tell you it's a gateway drug. Anything is to people like that. There are a whole lot more that will tell you its not a gateway drug that have smoked it and have never had a problem with moving on to other drugs.

That virtually proves my point. How am I to know my kid has an addictive personality or not? Assuming I don't know the answer to that question, I'd obviously choose to introduce my child to cigarettes over marijuana.

As for alcohol, your assumption has no bearing on the question. We were asked if we'd prefer to introduce our college aged kids to cigarettes or pot. Truth be told, I'd assume that none of us would introduce our kids to cigarettes or marijuana.

Cigarettes because they are a legal drug and do not impair your judgment or ability to function.

I'll second that.

I strongly disagree with that.

And they strongly impair your ability to live.

How do they not impair you ability to function? Lung Cancer in addition to other cancers are caused by smoking cigs, cancer is not fun I do not believe...Not to mention I hate when people smoke cigs and drive that has been known to cause a few wrecks...I have seen people get so addicted to cigs that they can't go out to certain public functions and events because they know they won't be able to smoke there...Many people can't eat without smoking a cig as well...

Yes, later in life after smoking for many years. It only takes getting stoned one time and driving a car to kill yourself or someone else or to end up in jail for possession.

Haven't you read on here? Being stoned and driving isn't dangerous at all .

For the record my vote in this thread is wrong. The poll question was different than the title of the thread.

I agree with this comment. I have several friends who have children who started as pot smokers and became "clinically dependent" (I guess different than addicted). This question is like choosing between the bullet in the chest or the brain.

I haven’t heard of many college age 20 something’s getting lung cancer. My answer is based on what I would rather my child do at 18-24 and the ramifications of his or her choices. I would rather they smoke a legal substance at the age of 20 and hopefully with maturity and wisdom they decide to quit before the long term affects of chronic use begin than smoke an illegal substance that could have immediate life altering affects.

More often than not that maturity and wisdom isn't going to take over...I here to many smokers say how bad it is and how bad they want to quit but it never happens, quitting has nothing to do with maturity and wisdom...It has to do with will power, dedication and determination and most can't put these things together to quit no matter how mature or wise they are to the health concerns it is causing them...

I must have missed that part. I’m sure there a number of law enforcement officers who would dispute that.

Statistics also show that smoking is steadily declining because more and more people are quitting. It can and is done every day. I quit 20 years ago (in my early 20s) and suffer no adverse effects from it.
