I had a lot more success putting it down than the multiple times I've quit smoking cigarettes and restarted. Fortunately I've been able to forego them for good.

Still, what you posted is almost as ridiculous as "Reefer Madness" is. Bottom line is marijuana has been stigmatized because of who uses it and not because of what it does, whether that be Mexican immigrants initially, black musicians later on, then hippies in the 60s and beyond. All were outliers from the mainstream, therefore it's easy to demonize them.

So you're saying that weed has had no effect at all the depressed/suicidal teenagers I've seen come into the ER the last 10 years.

It certainly can be a contributor. Alcohol can. Parents can. Money can. Sex can. Friends can. Intolerance can. Religion can.

I'm no clinical psychologist, so I can't really say. If it had no affect at all, though, why would people do it? Kind of like drinking O'Douls -- what's the point?

But I doubt very seriously weed was their main problem. In all likelihood, they turned toward it as a release from their issues, no different than someone who has a cigarette or strong drink to ease their stress.

I picked those two so that it would have a mix of people. That way someone can't say zero because they are using Asbury or KCC as their basis.

I don't think it requires an article from Scientific Journal to prove what many of us have witnessed.

Fine, Clyde. Use your one college student's 95% answer and go with it. I'm finished with this one.

You're exactly right Clyde. Funny you didn't mention cigarettes can though.

I could go on and on as to any factor that can indirectly lead to suicidal thoughts.....including cigarettes.

Why the anger? You said what I did. It's a lot more than many think.

To the gist of the question, however, I would suggest that just as in anything that is potentially bad for you, moderation and knowing your limitations is the most important thing.

Never heard of or seen anyone that had suicidal thoughts due to cigarettes. I think you're grasping there Clyde.

Do you personally know someone who has died where cigarettes contributed to the death? If so, would that number be higher than someone who died where weed was a big factor?

My point is that there can be a chain of factors where smoking cigarettes was involved. Just like weed. Just like a lot of factors. Weed by itself is Not why a kid shows up in the ER. Maybe the weed smoking started after sexual abuse. Maybe they were suicidal because they couldn't handle the stigma at church or in their house once it's known they smoke cigarettes. There is no ONE factor.

The question wasn't asked of me, but my dad died of esophageal cancer, and even though acid reflux was given as the leading cause, there's no doubt that his years of smoking also contributed. Like I stated earlier, pick your poison. My poison is overeating, and I'm sure will be the leading contributor to my death some day.

There is no doubt in my mind that smoking weed can greatly escalate depression in teens.

If we're operating under the widely accepted view that cigarette smoke causes lung cancer, yeah. Granted, pot smoke can be harmful as well, but I can't imagine there are too many people who chain-smoke pot and are able to stay awake very long.

Yet most parents have less of a problem with their child smoking cigarettes despite what we know.

That is the purpose of the thread.
