There is no doubt in my mind that smoking weed can greatly escalate depression in teens.

That's more likely to vary from individual to individual. We're all wired differently; one size doesn't fit all. Some people drink and get violent and stupid. Others laugh and joke and have a good time.

So can alcohol but many parents turn a blind eye to beer drinking.

I have no stats to back this up but I bet cigarette smoking is more damaging long-term than weed or beer. Why the double standard?

That I agree with.

Studies are actually starting to show (I'm wanting to say 3 in fact) that long term marijuana smokers are right around the same risk for lung cancer, heart disease, etc. as non smoking people. However, marijuana smokers who also smoke tobacco are at like a 20% higher risk. BUT, they speculate that marijuana smokers who also smoke tobacco more than likely smoke more tobacco than normal tobacco users. I have also read studies in which the claim is made caffeine is actually more harmful long term to the human body than THC (drug in marijuana).

Marijuana was never looked upon to be a bad thing until around prohibition times. Started out in Southwest border states as a way to discriminate against illegals who were fighting for jobs during the depression. Once Harry J Enzlinger became the first so called drug czar he made marijuana top priority. His first big gig was spear heading the prohibition movement so once it was repealed he focused his sights on drugs and marijuana became enemy number one. Then came the reefer madness campaigns, then the counter culture, all of which along the way brings us to where we are now with stereotypes that marijuana is very very very bad for you. Studies are coming along to prove what had been believed for centuries and that is that how harmful can a plant really be? A plant you might add who has over one hundred different uses. Uses such as fiber board (stronger than most wood products produced), canvas like materials, paper, rope, etc. etc. All other drugs are influenced by man, cocaine, heroine, even alcohol. Cocaine from the coca plant has to be processed by human hands to be turned into a drug, same for heroin from opium, same for alcohol from corn, wheat, barley, etc. Marijuana is all natural, simply picked and dried.

So if you haven't guessed, my vote is tobacco is far worst for any teen or college aged student to get involved in.

I've come to the conclusion that most of the parents you know are Catholic, and most of the parents I know are Baptist. :sssh::lol::lol:

And for all you Catholics out there, relax, I'm kidding.

Also, the way I look at it. If alcohol can be accepted in society and not considered taboo, than there is no reason at all marijuana should be looked at as something far worst. IMO marijuana is much safer than alcohol.

While that is true I am not sure it matters. KY is known for smoking. KY is not known for being a Catholic state.

Good debate. Battery dying . Off to bed.

Honestly I think we as a society would be much better off if marijuana was legal as opposed to Rx drugs like Oxycotin. I love the label as a "gateway" drug. It's all up to the individual that chooses to move on to different drugs, different strokes for different folks.

As someone who has smoked a ton of weed in college, a ton of cigarettes for 17 years and still drinks a ton of beer(albeit a lot less currently now that I am trying to make my belly smaller:D) I must throw my 2 cents in........

I would much rather my kids smoke weed in college than smoke cigarettes. I found it considerably easier to quit smoking weed than that of cigarettes. I also smoked cigarettes all day long and only on special occasions could I smoke weed all day long but I would smoke weed everyday and everyone I smoked weed with smoked cigarettes anyways. My choice is a rather easy one based on my own life experiences.

The question did not assume equal use. I think many parents' initial reaction would be any weed smoking is worse than smoking cigarettes. I am not sure if I feel that way.

Why not? It's not a fair question then IMO. Comparing becoming a cigareet smoker to experimenting with weed isn't fair at all. Give the choice for a parent to choose their kid smoking cigarettes or weed five times and I don't think you'd get the same answer as what you're wanting with this question. JMO

What stats do you have that show that they will "most likely experiment"? I never tried smoking cigs or weed in college.

Stop by Morehead's campus any day of the week. From the last few years of being there I would guess that at least 8 out of every 10 people I know have tried one or the other if not both. And that is a low number IMO.

How many of your friends who smoked weed in high school or college suffered the above?

More than a handful. I didn't know that info LRCW provided but it makes sense to me. I definitely feel like it does something to many peoples psychological health if they are consistent users.

Neither are dangerous by themselves. People in other countries drink alcohol and I would guess they have a lot fewer problems than we do. Its the use that makes them dangerous. A high driver is just as dangerous as a drunk driver as far as I'm concerned.

I would disagree, but thats just me. I know a lot of people who would say they are actually better drivers under the influence of marijuana because they pay a lot more attention then they would normally. Alcohol really messes with motor coordination, marijuana not so much. Marijuana actually makes you more aware of what you sense.

No way, I never buy that crap when people say that. I think its more the paranoia than actually paying attention for many of the people I know when they have driven like that. Alcohol physically messes with motor skills, but I think pot can impair judgement which is just as bad on a highway. JMO.

Wow I'm pretty suprised by this thread. Thought MaryJane would be way higher. To me I'd be more worry if my kid smoked it because they know they are really pushing the envelope+doing something against the law. I'd be more worried that it would lead to harder drugs down the road because the are making the decsion to do something illegal.
