Track The NL Central Champion Reds (Week 8)

Featured Replies

If the Reds decide to reach down to Louisville for a little offensive help there are some guys tearing it up over the last 10 games.

Francisco .410 16 for 39 2 HRs 9 RBIs 8 Ks

Alonso .410 16 for 39 2 HRs 8 RBIs 4 Ks

Sappelt .333 10 for 30 1 HR 4 RBIs 7 Ks

Frazier .333 11 for 33 3 HRs 11 RBIs 5 Ks

Mesorasco .333 13 for 39 2 HRs 8 RBIs 8 Ks

Cozart .326 15 for 46 0 HRs 2 RBIs 5 Ks

Here is what I would do. I would release Fred Lewis, and bring up Sappelt. My everyday lineup would look like this.

Sappet Lf

Phillips 2B

Votto 1B

Rolen 3B

Bruce RF

Stubbs CF

Hernandez/Hanigan C

Janish/Renteria SS

Very promising stats out of these guys. LF and SS have absolutely killed the Reds and it seems they have some nice options at those two positions.

Sappelt is still on the DL I believe.

Yonder has been playing LF. I don't think it has been too pretty but at this point you have to try something. Gomes is brutal at the plate.

Is there a reason you would release a guy who can steal a base and play defense and keep Gomes?

Stubbs, Heisey, Bruce and Heisey could all do the above. You need somebody that could come off the bench and hit a pinch hit home run.

Gomes has improved in the field but I doubt it would be considered a huge downgrade if Yonder was in LF. I can deal with an error or two if he can hit .275ish.

23 starts in LF @ Louisville with zero errors and 2 assists. They say his work ethic is outstanding also. He would give them another lefty hitter and his strikeout ratio is very good.

Zero errors doesn't really say much. How many balls does he fail to get to is what I would be concerned with.

If you're going to bench Gomes you have to put Heisey into the lineup and let him prove he can't handle it vs bringing up an unproven minor-leaguer. Heisey has earned that.

^ I see where you are coming from but Alonzo is a first round pick and pretty soon it's fish or cut bait. Just comparing Heisey and Gomes it is clear who's superior to date.

I hear his defense in left would make Manny and Dunner look like gold glove winners...Can't read a ball off the bat to save his life...Honestly ii know it would never happen but moving Votto to left and putting Yonder at first would be a better idea, I know Votto is becoming a great 1st baseman but he is also a much better athlete than Yonder..Now everybody can rip on me:D

So why are you keeping Gomes?

I would love to rip on you, but in this instance I agree. I wish Votto would at least make the attempt to play left. I think if he did, the Reds would have the best outfield in baseball, IMHO.

Say what you will about Gomes, he's passionate, he's whatever. He is a poor outfielder, he can't hit a pitch from the middle out. So, it is what it is.

If Gomes woes continue, and if Votto is planted at first, how long before Alonso is on the trading block to bring someone in here to play left field everyday?

Interesting item from Baseball America on the Red's projected 2014 starting lineup. The 2nd baseman and left fielder are both struggling @ Dayton after having great seasons @ Billings last year. Hamilton is a switch hitting SS with blazing speed. He stole 48 bases in 69 games last year. He is a small kid only 160 lbs but @ 6'1 will probably fill out since he is only 20 yrs old. Rodriquez is only 18 yrs old from Venezuela and is 6'2 and 185 lbs.

PROJECTED 2014

No. 2 Starter Edinson Volquez

No. 3 Starter Homer Bailey

No. 4 Starter Mike Leake
