Lexington Catholic 69 Dixie Heights 60

One of the more successful N Ky teams over the past few years has been Scott HS and they do play a pressing trapping style of ball with a very aggressive half court man. I think Carr does a great job teaching this system and like LexCath it is part of the "program". Coach Carr's teams can be very disruptive on defense and force teams to play at a tempo that they are not comfortable with.

I agree, very few if any other high schools in this area play that style of ball.

And I didn't think their press was that hard to break. Dixie's first 3 passes were the right passes, but then that's where they started to struggle. They were able to get it in, get it back to Trammel, and then immediately to Stansbury in the middle. After that, they struggled. If Stansbury would've turned around and the wings sprint down the sidelines, they would've been more efficient in beating the press IMO.

LC doesn't really care if you "break" it into the front court. Where they get a lot of their best results are when you break it and you pass it up the sideline because it's open. They then clamp down on you with the sideline being a defender.

Just watched the replay of the 3rd qtr.

Hatton took 2 shots - both early in the qtr. Made both for 5 points.

Took zero shots the rest of the quarter. LC extended their lead from 10 to 12.

In the 4th qtr he had 4 shots one resulting in a 2 shot foul.

When you're losing by double digits you cannot have your best offensive weapon get 7 shots in a half.

Here is a nice article on the game by Mike Fields: http://www.kentucky.com/2011/03/17/1673688/sweet-sixteen-seniors-carry-lexington.html#. At the end of the article, Dixie's coach mentions that no one in N. Ky runs the types of press/traps that LexCath does. Seems what LexCath does has been pretty successful. Can someone more knowledgable about the game explain to me why no one in N. Ky does what LexCath does? Does it take a special type of players to do it and no team in N. Ky has that type of players on it?

I'm not more knowledgeable about the game than you are, but generally speaking basketball in Central Kentucky is what football is in Northern Kentucky. Like the culture in Ft. Thomas produces special football players I think the same can be said for basketball in Central Kentucky. Oh I think teams in Northern KY certainly do run the types of traps that Catholic ran last night, they just don't do them as effectively. I was told the Martin kid from Catholic is going to KY on a baseball scholarship.

I couldnt agree more Clyde. I am going to probably get slammed for making this comment but I didnt think that Lexington Catholic was all that better of a basketball club than Dixie. They were definately the better team last night by far, but I have seen every Dixie game this year, and I think that was probably their worst performance of the year. However these boys should not hang their heads. They have made great strides this year and played in one of the best 9th region championship games in history. They have accomplished great things this year. Congrats to Lexington Catholic, and best wishes in the next round game friday against Christian County.

What happened on the possessions that Hatton didn't get a shot?

What was Lex Cath's shooting percentage? It seemed to me that Dixie's problem was on defense more than offense because they couldn't get the stops they needed.

Dixie's biggest challenge was matching up defensively. Their 2nd was offense in general.

It didn't appear LC was doing anything special to take Hatton out of the offense.

Zeke played well. His points seemed to come off of offensive rebounds more than plays run through him. Good effort on his part the entire night. Zero production out of their 3rd option.

I'd also like to go back and watch how many points LC scored after their first shot of the possession was missed. Way too many.

Here are the stats

Very interesting stats from that game. Makes the game look closer than it felt watching or listening to it.

The 4-19 from 3 point land has to be the lowest percentage all year.

You are probably right on that. How many threes were shot in Q4 in the comeback attempt? Maybe that skewed the number a little. But Dixie is a better shooting team than that number for sure.

Lexington Catholic players learn the press from the time they are in elementary school until the time they are in high school. The young Lexington Catholic AAU teams run the exact presses and offenses as they will as varsity players. Former player/coach at Lexington Catholic Danny Haney put the system in many years ago. It is fun for the kids to play and fun to watch.

Lexington Catholic succeeds because they are trained in the same system for many years and it is very effective and difficult to play against.

I'm thinking they were 3-11 at the half, but I could be wrong.

Sounds like the same strategy employed by the Highlands football program. Seems to be working pretty darn well.
