NKY POY: One Month to Go

Featured Replies

If you extended the analysis to best 3 sport athlete....I would go with Conley of Cov. Cath. (football, basketball, track/field)

There are several standouts this year that are multi-sport athletes:

Jake Geisler- Newcath

Trevan Brown- Boone Co

Brady Hightchew- Newcath

D'Vontae Bradley- Cooper

Alex Connelly- Covcath

Zeke Pike- Dixie

A few others that aren't stars, but pretty solid:

Dasean Peterson- Holmes

Charles Knox- Holmes

Jerry Arlinghaus- Holy Cross

Goose Cohorn- Dixie

Max Nussbaum- Beechwood

Corey Cruse- Beechwood

Pat Towles- Highlands

How many of these guys will play in college?

How many of these guys will play in college?

I would say at least 10 of 13..

I dont think there is anything "silly" as you put it about including Hatton in the same category as Smith. Hatton is a tremendous athlete and deserves to be on the same level with Smith, as well as Thelen, Geisler and Brown. As far as the head to head play , you might want to rewind the first game because Hatton was not contained by Smith , he shot 66% from the floor, was 100% from the free throw and three point line. He also added six rebounds and three steals. As far as the second head to head game, Kellen definately had the better game of the two. This is not because Smith shut Hatton down, Hatton shut himself down. He was 26% from the floor which is less than half of his normal average. I think to have a clear cut decision for POY at this point would be premature. There are five or six boys in NKY that are viable contenders. I think it will all boil down after the regular season ends and all the teams head into their regional competition. I hope continued success for all these young men, they are all exceptional atheletes.

1st game Kellen had 32. Hatton had 19 with 9 points coming from the ft line. Kellen had the better game! 2nd game Hatton had 11pts with his first basket coming with 2 minutes left in the 3rd qtr. Kellen shut him down plain and simple. Hatton's a very good player, Kellen Smith is better.

Get out of here. Your user name proves why you are homering Hatton and why your so much set on Smith winning the POY. If you honestly think that then you might be the only one of BP that really believes it. Smith is a very good player but Hatton is in another category. Hatton has been on almost every game this season. So since Smith in your words "shut down" Hatton, every game someone holds Smith under 20pts we can say he is the best player in NKY and leading candidate for POY? I just dont see how this is an argument. Smith is a good player and the best on Scotts team, but Hatton is a VERY GOOD player and is the best shooting guard and possibly player in NKY.

Hatton is a very good player. Right now at this point in time though, I would take Kellen Smith and hang up a lot of W's (not saying you wouldn't with Hatton either). Will Hatton be a better player over time? I think so and he still has a long way to go in his High School career. Kellen adds a ton of intangibles that don't show up in a box score. Hands down the most intelligent player in Northern Kentucky and gets the most out of his abilities. I think if you add these intangibles to his stats... well that is what gives him that seperation.

Hatton and Smith are two different players.

Smith is a true PG. Hatton is a 2. Smith's handle is the best in NKY. You can't check him with one kid.

Hatton shoots better and plays under control more than Kellen especially when going to the rim.

I'd take either of them.

Geisler is POY as of now , If you were asking for best 2 sport athlete I have to say Hightchew hands down !!

Hightchew is there, but I wouldn't discount Bradley of Cooper.

Actually, Geisler is a better two sport athlete than Hightchew. Geisler was one of the best tackles in the area and likely could get a D1 scholarship in football if he was open to it. But he wants to play basketball on the next level. So Geisler is a D1 level football player and IMO player of the year in basketball. I don't think anyone in N. Ky. can top that in the two sport category.

Geisler is a well respected athlete in NKY, but I do believe there are a few others that have the ability to be a two sport DI athlete. It may not be the basketball/football combination, but you could look at Conner Hemple as a committed DI football player with DI baseball skills, Trevan Brown as a committed DI football player with statistically DI basketball skills, I wouldn't count out Travis Montgomery for the possibility of basketball\baseball opportunities once he returns from injury. D. Bradley from Cooper football\basketball. Jodh Friedel, even though he's at Elder, he's a product of NKY, just commited to Air Force for football and IMO has real DI baseball skills. I'm sure there are a few others in NKY that garner recognition of the ability to be two sport student DI athletes. But as you stated, it is an opinion, and it's all speculation until the offer is in the players hands.

I think Hatton is a great player and will have an opportunity to put up some almost freakish numbers over the course of his career but if you are asking me about right now, this year I will take Smith. Hatton has the benefit of playing with arguably the best starting five in Northern Kentucky. He has a well defined role of scoring the basketball. He is playing with imo the 2nd best PG in Northern Kentucky in Matt Trammell. At this point in his career he is not asked to be a defensive stopper or be the leader on the court.

Smith makes everyone on his team better. He is asked to do more than any player in N Ky. He brings a toughness and an edge to Scott that is a reflection of his coach. He leads Scott in scoring, assists, steals and defensive rebounds. He typically guards the other teams best player and has even guarded post players. While his stats alone put him in the conversation for POY his basketball IQ and the intangibles put him and Giesler as 1 & 1A in POY argument in my opinion.

With that being said Hatton probably rings up three POY honors after this year but this year I would take Giesler or Smith.

At this point we will agree to disagree. Apparentely you are a Smith fan and I am a Hatton fan. You can have your opinion but no one would ever be able to convince me that Kellen Smith is better than Brandon Hatton. Hatton is on a team with the best starting five in NKY, so when he has nineteen points, that is huge. So how can you say Kellen had 32 and Hatton has 19 so he is the better player? If that was the case and we decided our POY by who has the most points, Smith would have already lost out there. Thelen is currently leading the NKY area in scoring and Hatton is above Smith in total points scored for the year, so that argument is pretty loose. Kellen is on a team where he is the only wow factor and Hatton wasnt guarding Kellen in that game. Also you apparently didnt look at my numbers from either game. Smith didnt shut Hatton down by any means. (You can check the stats on NKY.com). However I dont believe that would change your mind as well as you wont change mine.

Clyde, I think you summed it up best! They are both excellent players and again wish all these boys continued success.

I think there are at least 5 players that deserve POY honors. But the player that impacts the game the most both offensively, defensively and on the boards is usually a big man. Who would you want to start a team with? Answer that and that's your POY.

From Ryan Ernst blog in the Cincinnati Enquirer:

NewCath senior Jake Giesler appears to be the frontrunner for the Enquirer boys’ basketball player of the year award, but things are far from over. Boone County‘s Trevan Brown is averaging 20.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game against an awfully tough schedule, and Scott guard Kellen Smith is probably the most dynamic player in the area. More than likely, it will come down to the postseason.
