Do you think? Those things to come around full circle to bite ya. I think there was a game from last year that was same type situation with some questionable coaching decisions. So looking back at the thread question, I would say for Johnson Central to improve themselves, maybe they should start at the top. This stuff is crazy!

Well, nobody on this side of the state outside of Belfry and Sheldon Clark last year will play us. We offered plenty of people, too.

And when you're breaking in a whole new backfield, playing somebody like Highlands or Boyle County in week zero probably is not a great idea.

 

The schedule needed a SERIOUS downgrade from last year's constant brutality. With a whole lot of graduated seniors and thin numbers to begin with, getting your team destroyed early and often is a real good way to ruin a season (and potentially a program) in a fragile rebuilding period. No mountain team is going to compete with Highlands on a regular basis, ever. Is just is not possible. The population base does not produce that many athletes that consistently. There'll be good years, sure, where an upset win under the right circumstances might be possible - but most years, no, they'll be playing for a district championship at best and to advance for the privilege of being a Bluebird road bump on the way to their umpteenth state championship (just like everybody else in whatever class HHS is in). That's just the way it is. I personally am glad to see more winnable and fun games to watch on the schedule myself as a fan. That's my two cents, since everybody else has felt free to offer theirs on a scheduling situation they don't know much about.

Your post sounds like one of a team that struggled to go .500 last year, when Johnson Central actually went 10-3 and played two state champions to within a touchdown.

 

Looking at last year's schedule ... where was the "constant brutality?" Sure, Boyle County and Bell County were great teams, but Johnson Central is a 5A power and should be able to play with those guys. Knox Central, same thing. Belfry and Sheldon Clark are good teams, but they're also two classes smaller.

 

Simply put, there seems to be no reason for Johnson Central to be playing Heath, which didn't win a game last year ... unless, of course, that's exactly the reason they're on the schedule.

I would like to see a list of availiable teams for that week before passing judgement on scheduling Heath. If the headline was Johnson Central donates $1 million dollars to a childrens hospital a few on here would still pick it apart. Heath is an odd game though, wonder who else they could have scheduled.

Perhaps JC learned from last year and won't allow a KO return for TD just to get the ball back to pile up some more yards for a RB that should have been cheering on JV players. (OR maybe they will be "smarter" this year and simply fumble at the 1 yard line every time they are set to score to make it a running clock. That will really pile up the yardage!!!)

 

Back on topic -- I think JC has to at least give the "appearance" of some sort of balance by throwing the ball downfield on occasion. Even if the passes are not completed, it is something you show teams on tape that you are committed to doing.

For what it's worth, I can appreciate your argument. However, there comes a time where you have to ask yourselves why nobody wants to play JC......Could it have anything to do with the "rushing record" type games that have been played? just a thought

I know that the JC folks love Matney and frankly it's quite understandable why they love him. He has taken JC to heights never before experienced at JC. But the truth is, Matney is not well liked, respected or trusted out in the state for various reasons, including but not limited to the JJ Jude rushing record game last year. I know a lot of JC folks got upset two years ago when JC came to Highlands for the playoff game and the radio broadcasting crew for JC's area was told to move from the area behind Highlands bench. In my opinion, that wasn't done simply because Highlands wanted to inconvenience the broadcasting crew. I believe it was a lack of trust issue caused by Matney's reputation. If you can get folks to talk honestly, the distrust isn't localized just in Ft. Thomas as I've received a fair number of PMs over the years from some very solid posters on here about Matney, warning me about him. If I recall properly CovCath had some tape exchange problems with him a couple years back and I've heard of tape exchange problems from supporters of other schools, including schools in eastern Kentucky. Wasn't there a KHSAA issue several years back?

 

Eventually those crows come home to roost. I think those crows have roosted on this year's schedule.

Look at how JC performed against Boyle in the opening game two years ago in JK Hall's first game starting at QB vs last year's game when he was a returning starter at the QB spot. Night and day difference caused primarily by the lack of fumbles in the QB to RB exchange. So I understand why JC would not want to play a real tough game right out of the chute if Matney wanted to be certain of a first game win.

 

But still, having to fill the schedule with a not very strong single A team located almost completely across the state should at least raise an eyebrow or two amongst the JC faithful. Maybe it won't because of JC's accomplishments under Matney. But combine this issue with Matney's attempt to switch classes to avoid Highlands (and the rather bogus argument to the KHSAA as to why it should be able to move up to 5A), and the manner in which JJ Jude broke the rushing record last year, and some eyebrows should be raised. Am I saying that Matney should be fired? Not even close. But I do think the administration needs to talk to him about his behavior on some things.

 

I respect the heck out of JC football players as my posts on this site have surely indicated and I respect Matney for what he's done to dramatically improve the JC program, but there are some things I just don't respect about Matney.

This is a team that just got a new coach after going 0-10 last year and they will soon become part of the consolidated McCracken Co HS. Very accurate post. I was at the Ashland/JC game last year at Ashland. With like 9 seconds left to play, JC was up a couple TDs and had driven the ball down to about the Ashland 37 yard line. Matney calls a TO to set up the next play. I beleve as a team you never say die but down two scores with only 9 seconds left Ashland had given it their all, time was gone and they were ready to call in the dogs. Fully expecting JC to take a sportsman's knee Ashland gets set for the last play, the ball is snapped and next thing you know JJ gets to the edge and its addios muchachos. I know JJ and I gotta say you have to love him. Matney was the daddy of that one. I usually give a coach the benefit of the doubt but this time he had to set up a slap in the face TD so he could leave laughing, I guess. In a word, I thought it was classless. The Ashland players didn't deserve it, and even commented after the game that the JC players were respectful during the game. No way was that a fitting end for two teams that had up to that point shown respect for each other in a hard hitting and hard fought game.
