Kanter Permanently Ineligible

Featured Replies

So let me get this straight, Newton and Daddy turned down $150,000+ from a couple of sources just for their love of Auburn?? Got some beachfront property in Auburn, AL for you!!

No clue but you need some hard evidence to punish a kid. They had none on Newton, they did on Kanter. If they find some on Newton Auburn will pay the price, they will undoubtably forfeit the season and suffer penalties going forward.

Once you are deemed a pro, there's no going back. While the NCAA has gotten plenty wrong recently, that part has no gray area...

That team in Turkey got a steal, I bet he was the lowest paid athlete on their roster. Hell their equipment managers probably got paid more.

Not if they win the national championship. I've never known the NCAA to make a major sport vacate a title. Correct me if I'm wrong. If they had UCLA would probably have about 7 titles. IMO Memphis would not have been stripped if they had defeated Kansas. For some reason the NCAA won't touch that.

If some Bama fan finds proof you better believe they will. And Bama fans will dig for it. The Auburn/Bama football rivalry is as intense as any rivalry in sports. If they can find a shred of evidence that Cam Newton was paid by Auburn they will force the NCAA's hand on it.

It's a well known ploy by these European teams to hook young and talented players into their system. Take a chance on even marginal players. Pay them a nominal fee (by U.S. standards) and lock them down as a pro. If they don't pan out it's no skin off their nose. Cut em and let em go. In Kanter's case he developed into a great player. The Turks couldn't stand the fact that he wanted to move in a different direction, and at 17 did just that. So his former team did everything in their power to keep him from playing college ball. The NCAA needed to take that into consideration in this case and bend a little. This case had unusual circumstances. The hearing committee was the one that could have done it but they chose not to.

The better question would be "why didn't the NCAA DIG for it"?? Doesn't take a rocket scientist to to figure out this one--Dad shops kid to multiple universities-Names $'s needed-Kid signs with Auburn==Equals highest bidder!! Does anyone really think he went there for the weather??

Breaking news--Enes Kanter announced this evening he will be transferring from the University of Kentucky to either Duke or Kansas!! An NCAA spokesman said after reconsidering the situation, "the money he received was actually meant for his education" so he is expected to be ruled eligible!!

It is kind of ironic in thinking about all the "student-athletes" which try and circumvent the system by receiving money, tattoos, cars, etc., and we have this case of a family coming out with some disclosure on the front-end yet we will never see him play a second.

Isn't there a saying somewhere, "it's easier to get forgiveness than permission"?

The conspiracy paranoia is out in full force tonight. This is nothing against UK from the NCAA. When you look at what they said about Newton there is nothing inconsistent, in it they said had Newton's dad actually succeeded in getting money Newton would be ineligible. Here the Kanter's succeeded in getting money. As for Ohio State I would bet OSU will suffer a severe penalty over all this if theses guys go pro. If they don't then they are receiving the same punishment AJ Green received this year at UGA for breaking the same rule so that's pretty consistent. When it comes to amount over, even Kanter's agreed upon amount is more than 3 times what Selby or Sidney at start were found. Just last year John Wall was allowed to play for receiving almost a thousand dollars in benefits after he paid it back. So the NCAA isn't really as inconsistent as you guys want to think, it's just they've determined 33,000 is beyond the realm of paying it back to make amends.

Once it was found that AJ Green had committed violations, was he permitted to play in a game before serving his suspension? If not, then the punishments are different.

Ok they aren't quiet the same but for roughly same amount of money AJ Green suspended four games OSU players allowed to play in bowl game and are suspended for 5 games. Another one UK fans have been big on I've read on other boards with this is Dee Bost at Mississippi State but looks to me like Bost is getting much the same treatment as Randpolph Morris a few years ago and the "lost" fax.

So what was the rule change they made over the summer that was supposedly going to discontinue the lengthy suspensions that are handed out to Europeans (like the WVU kid)?

The rule changed was related to punishing amateurs for playing on the same team as pros. If anyone on the Euro club team was paid, the kid was punished...

I think the Ohio State guys, in light of Josh Selby's ruling, received far too great a suspension (and I hate Ohio State, just for the record). Selby gets $5,700 while Pryor gets $2,500. Selby misses roughly 1/3 of his season while Pryor misses 1/2 of his (assuming he comes back to play it). That is not consistent.

Thanks. So the WVU kid never got a dime & still had to sit 20 games last year? That's ridiculous, if so.
