That is the point I am trying to make. I see more excitement around the Sweet 16 than the football finals. IMO, one of the best moments in high school sports is the video montage of the Sweet 16 highights of each game before the final game.

I cannot speak for other areas of the state but I will say that in our area of NEKY that football is by far the most popular. I know of one school there was a saying that football was just something to do to stay in shape untill football workouts started. Some schools and fans put just as much emphasis on basketball but not many, jmo.

I believe that since Kentucky as a state is known for basketball rather than football is bc of U.K. and U.L. basketball and the lack of a national power in college football. Fans in the state live,love,eat,drink and sleep college basketball so imo most people think that is the main h.s. sport.

Other parts of the state have some very good high school bsketball and probably feel different. I am just speaking of our area where football teams are for the most part far better than basketball.

I think Kentucky became a basketball state partially by default in that many decades ago it was one of the very few states which really embraced basketball. Kind of like St.Louis was with soccer. Now, with basketball having become so popular all over the country, Kentucky's stature has faded. People in Kentucky obviously still love their basketball. It's just that other areas have passed us by in terms of talent and participation.

I think the Sweet 16 is so well attended because of: the location, and the time of year. I know the football finals can't be at UK because of the playing surface, but if it was, I think attendance would go up dramatically. As for the timing, football finals are in cold weather and that will deter some causal fans. The basketball finals have no competition from other sports and is inside. Just a good time for some entertainment in a time that there's not much more to do.

What was the total attendance of the football finals? It's probably not that far off.

 

One must consider that there are 15 games played at the sweet 16 as opposed to 6 state finals games. So of course the total attendance is going be higher. Average attendance at this years 6 games was 7900. Average for the sweet 16 per game isn't much higher than that at a little more than 8000 per game.

Cost may have a lot to do with Basketball Attendance. 5 dollars admission X 2 Adults and 2 kids = $20 + $5 gas + $10 Concession=$35 for a game most Schools play 2 times a week That is $70 a week. Now if you want to watch the Girls play, Well you can see what I mean. I've been to a few games this year the crowd was so small you would have had a hard time starting a fight!!:ohbrother:

Are there any middle school football games scheduled on friday nights when football plays?

 

Cause I know that there is conflicts almost every night that either the girls or the boys' are playing varsity basketball.

 

Football has set themselves up so that there is nothing else going on in the county as they only play one game per week.

 

The other night there were 12, count them TWELVE, county basketball teams playing on a single night that the varsity had a home game.

Overall, that's true now, but you never know. One example to think about is the University of Florida which is obviously known for football. If consideration is given to where their basketball program used to be to what it has become is impressive. I don't think many in Florida ever believed that they would win two national titles back to back. They have not been as good since, but something was accomplished that many never believed would happen prior to it.
