You have to wonder if Ky. is a football state when of the 17 seniors on the Courier-Journal All-State team(24 players in total)....3 have received no college offers and 6 have signed with or have been shown interest (in order of first listing) by the likes of Campbellsville, Lindsey Wilson, EKU, Morehead, Pikeville and Union. Maybe the 2nd and 3rd teams and honorable mention category have more college talent.

I think this nailed it. When Zeke Pike has offers from every major BCS conference school in the country and is honorable mention, it is a bit flawed.

Ram...I agree with the theme, but you went overboard on the seating example. I attneded about 15 of the very best games and none of the stadiums were filled to capacity.

I have been to a lot of basketball games where it was tough to find a seat and some at tournament time where the fire marshall ordered the doors closed. The regular season means very little in basketball.

We're obviously from different areas of the state, I have never seen a high school gym filled to capacity. Not even close. I may have inflated the football attendance a bit, but my point is: in my area of the state the comparison is not even close, not even the same ball park.

This is a great topic. Kentucky should no longer be called the basketball state. Between UK and Louisville, they've been to maybe one final four in 12 years. The popularity of football is growing in the state of Kentucky, look how many new programs have begun in the last 5-10 years. It is the most popular sport to watch on television and is the American "present time".

Friend you are comparing UK-UL collegiate basketball to high school football popularity, and in my opinion it is not the same. Since we are talking football here, when was the last time that either UK - UL football played for a national title?

 

On to the debate at hand, One poster here hit it on the head with football being more of a social event on a Friday night for a community. Folks are tailgating, catching up with old friends, talking and having a good time during what is generally a pleasant environment. Basketball is played when it is darn cold outside and not many are going to tailgate, and mull about socializing out doors.

 

I have also seen that where the basketball team has some talent many of the small town community teams will come out in droves to support them night in and night out.... comparable to football attendance on a Friday night. However, if they are average talent, not many folks come to watch.
