I agree it starts in the classroom! 60 minutes started on Thursday did my boy participate yes, would the basketball coaches prefer him not to (yes), his words not mine I need to get stronger! I am fine with it, it is his drive he works at everything, he enjoys both sports. He knows what football requires as I have been involved, does he plan on giving up basketball no! He is thankful for the opportunity to play both! If a coach demanded him to play only one that would become an issue. Will some of his current teammates choose one over the other ( yes) will that have a direct impact on basketball (perhaps) only time will tell. True story frosh coach told him you are not expected to be here at 60 minutes but we appreciate you coming! Is he a stud at either (no) but I would put his work ethic against anybody in that class. That is what makes us proud parents! He doesn't miss practices, make excuses! Take that on top of the academic requirements and he is not gifted in the classroom but works at that just as hard! Today kids don't even feel the need to make practices and parents are the first to excuse it.

Highlands is a tough place for bball. They need a very special person running the program to succeed. They haven't had that person for years.

I feel the AD should not be a coach, because they can become bias towards their own team. I believe this is the reason Rob Detzel stepped down at NewCath, plus the fact of too much time associated with AD job.

The AD being a coach doesn't bother me if it is the right person. As long as he cares about his/her school and does what is best for all students it shouldn't be an issue.

One thing that is missing here is that the last few runs of success had absolute high school legends leasing the way. Fraud, then Smith and Jared, then Neltner. I don't know enough about the school to know, but I don't see those type of players there. They don't come around often, so a system needs to be established from the Moyer league up teaching coaches what Highlands' identity will be and start installing that mindset the best that we can.

Somewhat true. The program used to attract players, now it loses them to others. Starts at the top...

Sometimes with a coach it's more than their ability to X and O. The "good ol' days" of Bear Bryant are gone. Kids do not respond to that approach. Mike Flynn isn't a Bear Bryant Junction Boy but IMO he isn't a coach that can relate to today's youth. That isn't a shot at him. That puts him in a large group.

 

If you get an X and O guy PLUS a strong ability to communicate and relate to 16 and 17 year olds you've got the guy. IMO this is especially true at a school like HHS who is struggling to get top athletes to play basketball. It's really easy for a kid to not play because of a lack of success in the program. You need a guy that makes kids want to succeed WITH and FOR.

BINGO!!!! What is disappointing is there is a coach like that walking the hallways of HHS and its not Schlarman
