Whats wrong with Highlands basketball

Featured Replies

And is that the football programs fault? I kinda of agree with alphabet soup. Kinda. I think in a couple years, we will see a basketball program at the top of the region. Along with the baseball program. Then it will be whether those programs can sustain the success. IMO they will!

Oh, uh TOG, really no clue there my friend!

With respect to alphabet soup he is wrong. He hasnt even come to a game yet so How could he even make an assumption. There is talent as a Whole but Only 25% of it gets the opportunity to develop it in the offseason.

This thread should just go away. I was talking to a parent of a football starter who plays Hoops this weekend and he admitted that with the intense offseason practices it makes it veryo difficult for the kids to physically want to go play Hoops in the evening or on the weekends in AAU tournaments. They have the option to do it but wont. With the fierce competition at just about every position you Run the risk of falling down the depth chart. This is evident with some kids not playing baseball as Well. The positions aré won in the offseason, not after the First day they can officially practice.

Look at other programs like CovCath. The majority of their key players aré purely basketball players. Starters Ruthsatz, Pauly, Tobler, Hayden, Frederick all strictly play Hoops. This means they aré likely playing in intense open gyms in the summer, playing in reputable AAU sanctioned tournaments and developing their craft.

Look at NCC, Miller, Siebert, McDonald, Beuter, Ryan, Pangallo, Dupont do not play football. They participate in offseason skill development open gyms Run by Jimmy Pangallo. They have Mike Kiernan working them out with basketball specific strength exercises. Most of These kids play AAU ball or even better have been playing together in open gyms throughout the summer.

You cant put the ball down March 1st and pick it back up on Dec 12th every year and expect to be a better basketball player. Raw athleticism can Only get you so far.

^^ It appears that you have it figured out. As someone said, the price you pay for all of those football rings is canabilization of your other sports. With this being known, how/why are you expecting more from your hoops program than it is capable of delivering? The players at Highlands who are committed to basketball, do many of the things you describe above. It is therefore frustrating when the football basketbirds commit to their primary sport, and join the hoops program already in progress. They must enjoy playing basketball or they wouldn't do it, hoping for, but knowing that their investment will not return rings, championships, and the glory that they achieve on the gridiron.

Highlands grad Willie Schlarman gave up a highly successful coaching career at Brossart, expecting to return to his alma mater and have the kids come out of the woodwork to come play for him and return the Birds' program to prominence. He coached the Birds for five years, with three of those seasons being 20-game winners, which brings up the next thing "wrong with Highlands basketball." Anything short of winning a regional championship in Fort Thomas is considered a failure. Merely having a winning season is not good enough. The perception must be that If the Basketbirds are not winning regional championships there must be something "wrong" with the program. Unfortunately success breeds success, and that works in the opposite direction as well. Mike Flynn is a well-respected, successful basketball coach. He is certainly knowlegable enough to put together a winning basketball program at Highlands if it were at all possible. If Willie Schlarman couldn't do it, and Mike Flynn doesn't seem to be capable of doing it, maybe under the present conditons at Highlands, it's simply not possible.

Is it lack of talent that comes out for basketball?

Ttt

I was waiting for this, I know it wouldn't be long after only beating Villa by 12 and then taking a pounding today.

Unlike in the girls thread talking about the Highlands coach, this is a question that "I" want to ask the Highlands faithful.........Is this a coach issue? Trust me I've heard many not happy with him.

No its a little more than that.

+ coaching?

Are they just not working hard enough? Not putting in the work during the off season? You would think "The Highlands Way" would work for all sports...just work harder, take your vitamins and say your prayers. Isn't that Highlands plan for success or was that for Hulk-a-maniacs? JK of course!

Good stuff.

Hulkamaniacs !

Mean Gene would be proud.

How many boys on the varsity team either play competitive AAU or have a history of it?

Witte and Turner played for 4 years from 4th-8th grade and they played with Beuter, Siebert, Devoto, Dupont from NCC. Outside of that I cant think of any others.

There are kids walking the halls of highlands who can help this team that have extensive AAU experience. 6'0 sophomores Bo Hoge and Griffin Urlage are two that are not playing and should be. They both played AAU during grade school for the Hornets. They stopped playing after 8th grade. Ben Weyer leaves for NCC after 8th grade year and is 6th man on Varsity. Junior Beast Seth Hope, may not be the most skilled athlete but he is a banger and could have helped this team in the paint. No show during summer and not playing. Throw in Herret leaving for CovCath and you have 5 kids that should be in the program and are not. Herret may be a situation that probably played out for the best but the kid has talent.

I'd rather the players mentioned above spend their athletics-related time on football... I am assuming that is a/the main reason they are not involved in basketball at this point.

They could not pick up a football for 9 months and still win a state championship. That is the sad part.

Watered down, look it up.
