And why would you say that? Any college football coach will tell you that they like recruiting kids that play more than one sport because it shows their athleticism and ability to compete outside of the football field. It is the short-sighted thoughts like this that have created the very reason for this thread in the first place.

Do you really thnk the run should be considered unprecedented considering the watering down of classes? Im not trying to get off subjct but give me a break.

Unprecendented success in a watered down football state. Because you would rather see every program at Highlands fail as long as the football team wins? Is that what high school athletics at Highlands is all about? Sure seems what you are trying to say with your comments. I would also ask which one of these sports you participated in? There are many "Star" players on the gridiron that have been more than successful on the basketball court. And yes they won numerous state championships in football in addition to getting Division 1 scholarships for football so it can be done.

Yes, I'd say the run has been unprecedented. They have absolutely dominated every KY program the have come up against not named Trinity or St. X, and have notched wins against Elder and Cincy St. X in the last three years. The depth Highlands has developed in football over the course of the past few years is amazing, given the size of the school.

 

I sure don't remember those great teams of Lorenzen and Smith, or Grover, Hamblen and Guidugli ever beating GCL schools... I seem to recall that those Highlands teams had a lot of athletes play other sports in addition to football.

Lets be honest, its been a cakewalk the past 5 yrs.

Then why aren't the people in Fort Thomas more up in arms about the basketball and baseball teams being mediocre? I bet if the football team started turning in some .500 seasons a whole lot of people who have a whole lot to say about it...

 

Fort Thomas is a football town and Highlands is a football school. Why wouldn't the kids want to be a part of the Highlands football tradition? Given the interest level in the sport, the kids have to invest a lot of time in football to earn starting spots and PT. I mean, books are being written about the Highlands football team, for gosh sakes! How can basketball compete with that???

They sure care about the football program though.

Highlands athletes try their hardest to be the best in all of the sports, but it doesn't always work out for a myriad of reasons. Let's just enjoy what we have...a lot of quality students playing sports. There is nothing better...

The numbers of kids in the program playing AAU or having a history of AAU sounds very low. Why aren't some of the current BBall only guys playing in high school? Seems like they should be playing AAU if they really want to make a difference. And the overall number of AAU kids is really low. If you are a BBall kid and want to remain competitive, you MUST play AAU or you will never be great. It's the new age of BBall. There are about 450 boys at HHS. Guessing just over 100+ play football. Need to develop the other kids and make the football players that play BBall a bonus. Not sure if that is the head coach's responsibility or not. But I would be in front of the boys at a young age encouraging the boys and their parents that if there is any interest in BBall, they better find an AAU team. I have all kinds of 6, 7, and 8th grade boys from other schools calling our AAU coaches in oct after their kid just got cut from their MS team. They weren't good enough to make the team because the others were competitive AAU kids. I got news for most of them, it's probably too late. Need to start (especially boys) early! Agree 100% and very similar to what was posted by yours truly earlier in the thread. Earlier this evening HhS boys lost composure and dropped from the undefeated ranks to a NewCath feeder 7th grade team. The team with the best athletes lost composure and was beaten by kids that play a lot of ball in the gym and can really shoot lights out! Trust me if it was a football contest we win by 7 touchdowns . They had more moxie and at crunch time it was the difference in the game! I had a nice conversation with Steve Pangallo afterwards. There are kids that play AAU just not enough in the younger ranks! It is changing and if I was a betting man there is not a kid outside AAU ranks that will make a team in the third/fourth grade group. True story my youngest is an average AAU player but to some parents he is the next Michael Jordan in the Moyer league! He enjoys it but these parents that think this is good enough is crazy!!! For those that whine that they can't find a team. My oldest developed his shot practicing AAU ball as far as Walton Verona when he was in the third grade! Make the time parents stop sending E-mails blaming the coaches in the middle school why Johnnie doesn't play. Quite frankly he is getting more time than he should! Like I said earlier I see players in the middle school that have skill sets that are just poor. That day is changing...
