Got to be impressed with the Blue C's. Congrats on the blow out win over Conner. I don't understand the free throw shooting woes in Park Hills. I'm sure they work on that a lot. They are gonna have a very nice year due to so much depth and great inside play.

Baker IMO is the difference in this Colonel team as well as their quality depth. Teams cant just focus on stopping Thelen. Maschinot seems to be coming along nicely as well. Can the Colonels handle full court pressure and will their FT shooting as a team get over 60%?

Drew Baker spent last season playing almost exclusively on the junior varsity basketball team for Covington Catholic even though he was a junior, but the experience he gained helped him turn in a dominating performance against Northern Kentucky's preseason No. 1-ranked team.

 

Baker, a 6-foot-7 senior forward/center, recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks, added seven assists, and got some major help from frontcourt mates Jake Thelen and Alex Connelly as CovCath whipped Conner 67-54.

Why? Because he's a CovCath fan? That's a pretty good reason to hate Dixie:lol:

 

To paraphrase Coach Eckerle from back in my football days, "When you go to Cov Cath, there are three things in the world that can be said to be certain: death, taxes, and beating Dixie." :lol:

Why is Conner having such a hard time scoring? They look pretty good on paper but they just aren't performing on the court as everyone expected.

 

When you watch Conner boys offense it is like watching a girls team run an offense. What I mean is that they only look to score when wide open, no creativity, and they almost always slow it down so the coach can call a play.

Good assesment flat rock. I beleive one of Conner's woes last night was the inability of Coach Hicks to call plays and direct his team because of the noise of the fans. You would think there would be a motion offense or a plan in place if the play breakdowns. Conner seems lost in the half court set. This is terrible because they don't play a transition game. So much talent and it appears to be self destructing in Hebron. I know it is only six games, but this team is in a downward spiral. Long faces and hanging heads on palyers is not good. Friday's matchup with Ryle will be key for the Cougars. Congrats to Cov Cath. They looked like one heck of a team last night. I loved the momentum and the team play.

Perhaps, Conner could try using some flash cards with their plays written on them. I know I've seen some colleges use this system. On another note, Conner has three losses, but they are all against good, solid teams (Dixie, Boone, CCH). I believe they will benefit greatly from the two holiday tournaments they are participating in over the Xmas break.

Dan Trame used to use signs/flash cards when he was at SK. I can still picture his son on the bench pulling them out of the briefcase.

 

With that said the problem with the Conner offense is missing shots. While Baker blocked and/or altered many shots I saw a lot of others missed at close range. One kid had an open shot on the right side but tried to go under to the left and missed. Guards missed short runners. Most high school offenses get decent shots. It's simply a matter of making them.

 

Lastly, as RE points out, it's way too early to panic. They've lost to 3 of the top 4 programs in NKY. Dixie was a good game. Boone was really ugly. CCH looked really good.

 

Again, it comes down to two things for me: execution and passion . In the Boone and CCH game they didn't seem do either well.

A coach calling a play is the way a lot of teams operate. I've always wondered why a play has to be called every time down the court. What are teams doing in practice? I think kids at the high school level are capable of looking at a defense and knowing what plays or what their options are based a particular defense. It seems to me unless there is a break right off the in bounds most kids are looking at the bench for what to do next trip down. Let the kid's play a little bit. I know there are times the coach needs to step in and call something, but every time down the floor?? :confused:

If the Colonels can shoot free throws they have a chance to go really far IMO.

I did predict a Conner win. But said I wouldn't be surprised if Covcath won.

 

Colonels inside game was obviously the difference and I see that being the case in a lot of games this year. You and I talked about Baker, Thelen, and Connelly after the X game and I told you how impressed I was with the size and presence of those three. They definetly didn't disappoint in this one either.

 

Guess I gave Coach Hicks and Conner a little too much respect, and not enough for Coach L and his bunch. :thumb:
