I think ultimately the loser of the game has to consider this season a "bitter success," if that makes sense.

 

First, Ryle has had a terrific season, going 11-1 at this point. Many have even discussed Ryle being the third best team in the state, maybe even second (ahead of St. X). They had a huge win over Highlands to close the season. The expectations are high and rightfully so. But we must also remember that this will only be the second regional final in school history. It would be hard to call the season unsuccessful if this team does something only one previous team has ever done.

 

Second, Simon Kenton has had a terrific season, going 10-2 at this point. Simon Kenton has seen a great deal of talent come through their doors the last few years and have made hay with those teams. But most would consider Ryle the ever-so-slightly better team this season basically on the merits of winning a close game for the district championship a few weeks ago, even though Simon Kenton has been a legitimate Top 10-15 team in the state all season. But much like Ryle, success is new to the Pioneers as well. Remember this is a team that had won 1 playoff game in school history when this year's seniors enrolled as freshmen.

 

So ultimately both teams want to win Friday and will take a huge step for their program if they can get the victory. But while both would be incredibly disappointed with a loss this weekend, it would be next to impossible for any realistic fan to view this season as unsuccessful for these two northern Kentucky clubs.

Ryle will have a tough challenge to close the gap until they start allowing tuition students.

SK had the taste slapped out of their mouths in Louisville in the championship game 2 years ago (since Ryle had the same experience in fact).

Either team should be disappointed if they dont win. One game a season does not make. Every team starts with one goal. There are no moral trophies handed out in December!

SK was closer last year in playing toe to toe with X, who went on to win the state championship; competing with and sometimes beating X & T should be the ultimate goal for these two programs; Ryle's encounters with the big 2 have been much more lopsided; consistency is the key for both; Dixie has actually done more than both in beating T once and playing them tough in other years.

I had to go back to an old KHSAA scoreboard because I could not remember the year. It was at T in the 1999 playoffs and T beat Ryle in double OT 32-26.

I think SK has had a winning season no matter if they win or lose against Ryle. There were many people who said they would be nothing without Miles Simpson and Jordan Hansel, and look how well they've done and how far they've come since the Middletown crush. So, yeah, I'd would say they have had a successful season. "Now, SK . . . go take out Ryle and hush up all of the hater's and show them what a success your season has really been!"

Not a lot of haters of SK, just people tired of nonsense from a few overzealous posters. It has been a good year for both teams but the loser will view the season as not totally successful. Only one team in each class ends the season feeling that it was a total success. That's the way it should be.
