I think I heard someone say that Coach Yeast would be finishing up school in May. After that, it pretty easy to get your certificate taken care of...it's just the process. He also was the OC for a Marion Co. team that went to the State Semi's last year and helped turn a bad Washington County team into a winner this year (3-8 to 9-2).

 

I don't think Buchanan would leave Mason Co. When you build something and make it successful it makes it hard to leave, even for home. And it doesn't help that home is a complete wreck.

 

The only hangup I can see with Raines is the administration aspect. Will they give him what he needs to be successful? If not, I'd say there are better places he could land.

It seems like the same old good guy that has been wronged has been the case for Bill Mason @ his last 2 stops. It seems like and I could be wrong, but he has underachieved @ Nelson & Mercer. The fans have been unhappy w/ the performance & overall attitude of the team, which the head coach has to be the one to own up to this even if there are other factors. Knowing Bill, he is a great guy that does the right thing, but as a head coach has had some issues. This does not mean that he is not a good coach, just not a head coach. I wish Bill the best & Mercer as well, but it seems that this is a mirror image of the situation (Nelson Co.) that he came from before he went on to become Mercer's head coach.

What does Britt currently coach and where? I'm not familiar with the current Mercer staff. Is he teaching there and coaching somewhere else or has he been part of the program already?

Has been apart of the program the last 4-5 years, and has taught in the school for this amount of time as well.

I think Paul Rains should be highly considered for the job. A winner in every aspect. His record speaks for itself.

I agree, Rains is a proven, experienced coach who knows how to win. IMO, Rains and Buchanan, are the only 2 coaches that have been mentioned as possible candidates that have what the Mercer program needs. They both have excellent resumes so to speak and know how to win. From what I hear from the Mercer community is they favor Buchanan because it is home, and he definitely has passion about the Mercer football program... back to the days when his dad, John Buchanan coached at Mercer. And as stated before, he BUILT a Mason County football program that has gained respect from the football community around the state. Mason was only a basketball school before he got there and now they love their football too. If he were to consider coming to Mercer, I think he would be here for the long haul.

Britts brother will be the head Basketball at Mercer this year also. The Britt family knows sports so he would not be a bad choice.

It appears that you favor Buchanan. The question being why would he even consider leaving a secure position like Mason County to take on a volatile situation like Mercer? Homeboy or not when he struggles he will get the same treatment every other coach has gotten. I think both he and Rains would be great choices for us, but I just can't come to convince myself that they would actually consider this situation. Whoever gets the job should be set up with nice numbers in the upper grade levels and should be set up to be a player in the district race.

Yes, I do favor Buchanan. Like I said, he or Rains would be great for the Mercer program. From what I know and from what I hear in the community, Buchanan is the favorite. But I do agree that it would be hard to see him or Rains stepping in to this situation if the administration isn't willing to do some things to help them in order to get them here.

IMO I believe they should bring someone in outside the Mercer coaching staff. Not saying I do not like Britt Mut, I think most the parents want someone new. I dont really know much about Yeast other than he was an assistant at I believe Lincoln and Marion. You make excellent points! And yes, the decision needs to made in January, but I do agree with you that the administration's past record doesn't give us much to be confident about. The ol 'pull a name out of the hat' cracks me up, but has some truth in that statement. :thumb: And as a fan, you state what I hear all over the community... they don't expect Buchanan to come in and go 10-0, but they know we will see a drastic change and step in the right direction for exciting things to happen for the Titans football team.

Lets not forget that Yeast also grew up there and is a darn good coach. I think the community would welcome him as well, considering that he is a home grown boy that went on to set SEC records and play 8 professional years as a player. If he wants to come home that speaks volumes to me. As of now, he coaches at Washington Co and helped them turn their program around. WC was 3-8, Yeast joined their staff and they went 9-2 this year. He was the OC at Marion last year, they went to the semifinals and their offense was very explosive, he left and their season was not good (5-6). I also know some of the parents of the kids at WC and they say all of the kids on the team love playing for him. This says a lot about about what type of coach and person he is.

Remember This, I do not know him personally, I know some of the parents of the kids he coaches at Washongton Co. By all indications he is a great one and they hope they can keep him around. They say he brings a lot to the table and like I said before, their kids love him. I agree that not all great players make great coaches, but from what I hear he is the real deal. Ir would seem that he would be what Mercer needs.
