After reading some of your previous posts it is apparent that you have a kid on the team. It appears that you believe that it is all about winning, which is a large part of the job. But to have no regard as to whether a coach is a quality teacher is just amazing. I believe this post sums up our situation at Mercer County!

 

So I guess you could have a coach who goes 10-0 but is involved in illegal activities and you are ok with that!

 

 

Well if you have read my past post i was clear that i had a kid on the team, its not i dont believe that a coach should be a good teacher, i just dont believe you should base how you hire your coach on how they teach, becuase A's dont get you a "W" on fridays, i believe the head coach should not be required to teach to focus more on football, and who said anything about illegal activities? how can a coach or teacher control what a student does when he/she leaves? illegal activities are more of a parent problem wouldnt you say?? and what sums up the situation?? we want a winning coach, that helps are kids progress hopefully to the next level, um yea ill admit to that haha

At Mercer County, there are too many fingers in the pie.

I think you are taking the statement to the extreme. I understand the point trying to be made. I feel bad for the players too. It doesn't seem like they are being put in the best possible situation to succeed as football players.

 

Amen and Amen! There is a 'common thread' by most posters and that is administration, both principal and superintendent. Getting a great coach is only part of the solution... change in administration is also vital for the program's success!!

So why don't the parents get together rail against the principal and move to get him changed? If they can get rid of a football coach they can get a principal reassigned.

They couldn't get rid of Coach Mason. He left on his own. The administration told Mason he still had his job if he wanted it. He chose to leave.

I heard unless Jaggers swallows some major pride and apologizes to Yates he won't get it.

 

I heard Rains wants it really bad.

Jaggers- Amazing. To think a man would have to apologize to his former principal for wanting to retire from teaching, when elligble to do so, but still wanted to remain as head coach? I could see both Yates and Jaggers sitting down and working things out, but a far as one soley apologizing to the other? That'd be a bad sign. Jaggers needs to stay retired; hunt and fish like he does, while going to see North Hardin (brother Crad coaches) and LaRue County (son Josh) games if that's the case.

 

Rains- Great choice. He has won everywhere he has been and really was screwed at LCA in being forced out.

 

Britt- Not a surprise here either. I wondered about whether his name would come up. A very good assistant that like several out there, just needs his chance(s) to arrive.

 

Buchanon- The hometown boy. He has turned a once thought Basketball school only into a football program that seems to be in the mix come November every year.

 

Whatever Mercer does, I just hope they realize the longer they prolong this hire, it's only hurting the young men that play. It's a shame too, because as bad as some of the parental and administrative problems have been, it still has the potential to be a very, very good job.

Regarding Yeast - I've heard they want an experienced, veteran head coach, which Yeast is not. He may be a great head coach someday, but many don't think he is ready for a job of this magnitude.

 

Jaggers - haven't heard any serious talk about him coming back... apology or not.

 

Rains - heard he is interested in the job and he knows how to win.

 

Buchanan - yes, he seems to be the community favorite. Hear his name every where. Mercer being 'home' and the fact he has built a football program at Mason Co. is a factor.

 

Britt - I've heard the same thing, but the consensus for thinking he will get it is because the hs principal Yates keeps stating there is no position open and Britt is already a staff member at the high school.

 

Unfortunately for the program, Yates and company have yet to even post the job or gather a committee. Fortunately for the players, I've heard Todd Davis is running the weight room and has already started it and plans for serious work outs. At least the kids are lifting while they have to sit and wait on administration to even get started looking.

 

I was told Yates and AD Guerra won't even begin the search until after the football banquet which is sometime in December.

Something like that and we all know you must be teaching at Mercer to be a coach. That is all hearsay though. I have no idea if he does or doesn't have a degree/certificate but that seems to be the word. I wonder about the 'inexperience' angle against hiring Yeast when it seems that Britt is the front runner. It is going to be very interesting to see how this all shakes out. Whenever it shakes out.

 

I agree Mercer can be a great job with a lot of upside. Winning in this district will only propel a coaching resume. To think someone can't win in this district because of the participants is the wrong attitude to have. The talent is there it just needs to be led properly.

 

Honestly, I think all 5 guys are good choices. I think the jury is out on Britt in the community and I think his brother will help him in the court of public opinion as time goes on.

I think that any of the 5 would do an outstanding job. The last 2 years have seen some small senior classes, it looks like next year we will have a bigger senior class. I think with numbers being up and the talent that we have we should be able to be really competitive next season. I wouldn't be surprised to see them hand the keys to Britt as stated he is in the building and maybe he is ready for his first HC opportunity.
