Matthews needs to be looking for the ball, especially when he knows they are bringing the heat after Hartline.

UK football pretty much passed the majority of its fans off to basketball with this loss... UK may have to win out to even make a bowl and if they do, it'll be at best Music City and at worst the Toilet.

Tough loss, another close loss. All in all, they looked better tonight than they did last year against them in Lexington.

Chris Matthews broke off his route before the end zone. It was supposed to be a jump ball pass to him but he ran the wrong route. Same Chris Matthews who was suspended for the first quarter of the game because he cant show up to a team meeting on time. Im thinking they covered late game pass routes when he wasnt there.

This loss pretty much cements that the game in Knoxville is their bowl game.

If they can end that streak along with the USC/Spurrier streak, then this year will have been OK, no matter the bowl situation.

Birmingham would just be awful for a bowl game...but palatable coming off a win versus the Vols.

 

Joker lost his cool tonight. Should have called a timeout before that 4th down play. He was still upset over what he perceived to be a holding call, not called against King. You knew the house was coming....he deserves some of the blame.

 

The Wildcobb has lost some of its effectiveness without Locke in there because teams do not have to respect the jet sweep to Locke.

 

Disappointing, opened the season with three cupcakes and have gone 1-5 against the meat of the schedule. You are what your record says you are.

Afraid that basketball enthusiasm may die off quickly this year as well. You might want to stick it out with the football team until the season is over.

I think Coach Brooks handed off to Joker this season because of the easy conference schedule compared to years past. But, I really wish he would have stayed for this year. This Cats team just isn't that talented overall and a veteran coach could make up for it.

 

But how about Dan Mullen? I'm not bashing Joker, but why can't we get a coach like him? Mississippi State was about as big of a joke as Vandy when he took over and he continues to win with no talent compared to the heavyweights of the SEC. I'd actually say UK is alot more talented overall than MSU, but Mullen does a heck of a job. If I'm Georgia or LSU and I fire my coach he's my first call. Actually Michigan fans wouldn't want to hear it, but if I'm them and I fire Rich Rod, I'd go and get him rather than Miles or Harbaugh. Harbaugh is a great coach, but his style of play doesn't fit what Michigan has which is what started their whole mess in the first place (along with having no talent) and he'll be in the NFL shortly I think. Dan Mullen is a coach on the rise IMO.

A head coach is only as good as his coordinators and assistants. Tubby Smith found this out the hard way in his final years at UK. Ask Urban Meyer about it at Florida now.

 

Bottom line is, UK cant outscore anyone on offense because they dont have that one playmaker in the backfield i.e. a Lattimore, a Ballard, a Bolden, etc. Locke tries to fit that role but isn't durable. On defense, they dont have that stopper on the line. They are basically 2-3 players short on both sides of the football to being able to win consistently in the SEC.

Your wrong on the overall talent, Mississippi State has been higher in the recruiting ratings for as long as I can remember. Mississippi produces far more 4 and 5 star talent than Kentucky in the high schools. In reality, it is amazing that UK is as competitive as they are.

Very accurate post. Joker definitely blew it at the end as you stated. Still no run defense and Hartline did not play well at all. But he didn't have much help either.

Recruiting rankings? Are you serious? I don't care what the rankings say, Mississippi State is not a greatly talented team. They have 2 QBs who are extremely average, as is the rest of their team the staff just squeezes alot out of their players and play to their strenghts. Locke, Cobb, Matthews, Hartline, King are better than anything they have on an individual basis IMO, I don't care what star their players are.

 

Recruiting rankings is your argument? They are worthless in football. The rankings would tell you that Notre Dame is one of the 5 most talented teams in America, and that Boise, TCU, and teams like that have no one. I think recruiting rankings are as political as can be. Watch a kid that is 3 stars commit to Bama or Florida, and they'll be a 4 by the time the new rankings come out. The rankings tell you nothing about the talent level. I love following football recruiting, but the rankings are an imperfect system based on camps, highlight tapes, name/school recognition and a little evaluation. BBall rankings are alot more representative of the overall talent level, though they have some misses as well.

I think a good coach versus an average coach is worth about two extra wins per year, given the same talent.
